Just pointing out that it's a very wide seeeping statement to say that theoretically all HSS drill bits should performe the same. The alloy content of the blank makes up just a part of the performance of a drill bit...

if you are worried - take the sides out first and the weight is being held on the front, put the gallows in then if you feel you need to, prop the side on the gallows before you take the front out...that way it's always supporteded.

If the timer is pretty rough then you might have problems with the thicknesser gripping the board properly and consistently for a good finish. it's also likely to rock throught the tool hence you'd normally plane one side and then you've got a flat side to work off.
