Wall paper paste removal before painting - Zinsser Gardz

Hello everybody! I’ve just removed peeling lining paper from the walls of my living room and I’m now left with quite a lot of paste residue on the walls. I’ve just about resigned myself to steaming/scraping/sugar soaping the paste off as best as possible but just noticed a product that might...

Help converting standalone garage to warm office room

Sorry buddy. Studwork is the timber frame you build inside to form an inner wall. If you stand it off the external wall it'll create a cavity. Vertical studs are the vertical pieces of timber from floor to ceiling, usually spaced out at 600mm spacings to take 8' x 4' plasterboard sheets. Noggins...

Help converting standalone garage to warm office room

Ignoring the above post, I'm 80% through doing the same as a DIY project. I purchased all the materials (timber, celotex, membranes, flooring, plasterboard, electricals, fixings & sundries) for about £2k. I had builders quoting me between £4k and £6k to do the job (mats & lab) for what they...

Vapour control layer btwn floor insulation and T&G floor

Got a 1200ga DPM on top of the existing floor slab. Now planning to lay Celotex on top and T&G chipboard flooring on top. Do I need to separate the insulation and T&G flooring with a vapour control layer. I can probably tape the foil on the celotex, or I have some 1200ga left over I could...

Vapour control layer - electrical wiring in front or behind?

Finished insulating my stud work this weekend. It's 4" deep timber with 75mm Celotex between leaving a 1" gap in front for cables & k/o boxes. I plan to run the cables horizontally in the void on the room side of the Celotex, with notches in the front of the studs. I've installed some secondary...

Celotex GA4000 - printed side in or out?

Hi, I'm currently fitting Celotex GA4000 between wall studwork and roof rafters in my garage. It's foil backed on both sides. One side is printed. Does it make any difference which way round I install it (i.e. printed side facing in/down or out/up?). Have signed up to Celotex website to get...

Garage conversion - wall/floor detail, soleplate and DPM...

<<YAWN>> Your comments are all very welcome (with varying degrees of helpfulness) but can we keep things constructive please. My materials are being delivered today so would like to make a start this evening. I understand the mechanisms of interstitial condensation from inside and the...

Garage conversion - wall/floor detail, soleplate and DPM...

Why would putting the bricks in preclude insulating the floor? I could just run DPM over the brick before fixing the sole plate. Alternatively, what's the problem with: 1. Suspending the breather membrane from the cavity side of the top plate and tucking the bottom between the DPM and wall...

Garage conversion - wall/floor detail, soleplate and DPM...

I'm not proposing to put a breather on the inside of the stud?! It would go on the outside of the stud (or inside of the blockwork wall) and drain to the bottom of the cavity, ideally on the outside of the DPM, but that's the detail that I was hoping one of you lot might confirm...

Garage conversion - wall/floor detail, soleplate and DPM...

Yeah, that's what I thought, hence the requirement for a breather membrane on the outside of the studwork. Trouble is how do I fit a breather membrane on the back of the stud if it needs to be built in situ? I assumed the breather needs to be run horizontally with the higher courses...

Garage conversion - wall/floor detail, soleplate and DPM...

Thanks again. Floor's floating 22mm chipboard on 50mm Celotex on DPM. Not sure about leaving out the breather membrane on the back off the studwork as nearly all the local council BC advice seems to suggest it's a requirement.

Garage conversion - wall/floor detail, soleplate and DPM...

I get the idea that the breather needs to be on the back of the studwork rather than the wall but should it drain on top of the DPM, or should it be tucked in between the DPM and wall?
