sorted it, i removed a few cable clips in the loft so i could feed more of the wire through, put some more protection around the wire coming throught the mounting plate and cut off the wire that was causing the short. thanks for all your help

ok il inspect this closely tomorrow. so does a short not always trip the fuse?

i havent screwed anythin new in since it was working, possible could have caught it on the casing but that would trip the fuse though wouldnt it?

i have a problem, whenever i switched my bedroom ceiling light/fan on the fuse went. thought this would be something to do with the switch connection inside the fan so i took the casing off the fan everything looked fine so i swiched it on while the casing was off and hey presto its working, so...

yes it did work, it is only last few days when it has stopped working. there is a pullcord on the fan for the light and fan, but the fuse trips when i switch it on at the wall switch. im thinking maybe there is a problem with the switch wire connection in the fan, is this the most likly case?
