You must know boilers well if you recognised it from its fixtures and fittings - so what is involved to get this dripping valve fixed? Is it straighforward for a plumber? Could I purchase the part and fit it?

Hey Tony, I think as its late 18th century it has just the one drainage system for surface water and soil waste, or at least to my knowledge. But I shall investigate further as the guttering at the front of the house all runs into a gulley but I should think it ends up in the same place...

Although wouldn't that rely on good adhesion of the first coat and if it may have not penetrated deeply into the wood both lays may scratch off together. Worth noting is that spirit based varnishes (non acrylic/water based) are good as they don't raise the grain and achieve a smoother finish .
