Took lots of advice from website while prepping old plastered wall. Stripped, scraped and cleaned em back to plaster and some old paintwork. Even sanded them a bit. Filled all holes etc.
After hanging a test sheet ( 1 length on ceiling before me and missus had bust up ) of 1400 paper can see outline of paint that wouldn't come off. Should i wash all the size off them and paint a coat of primer or such to even up surface? Will two coats of paint hide it if i keep papering? Should i stop freaking out and not expect perfection?

You could try lining it twice..crossline then normal or vice versa it doesnt really matter.

But finish with an 800 grade its a bit smoother for painting on IMO

Thanks Zampa.
Just realised that layer of old paint is really a thin skim of plaster that has come off with wallpaer stripping. Only thin as layer of paint. Last paint job looked good in places before ripping it off. Just lining paper and paint over bad wall but I think it must have been skimmed beforehand. Maybe I'll double paper it then.

You could just mix up a bit of polyfiller and apply it around the protrusion, then when sanded smooth you wouldn't have a ridge. When lined it should be practically invisible. Also, sometimes with 2 or 3 nice coats of brilliant white emulsion can hide some minor imperfections anyway, it just depends how bad the ridge is.

Meanwhile....3 years later..........

you've gotta admit for the sake of what i understand is a small area of outline showing through, crosslining twice over is a bit much. I'd only crossline twice if the vast majority of the wall was in a poor condition, but if its just affected in one or two small area's, then a bit of pollyfiller just to level up the surface is much quicker. Obviously some people can't be arsed to wait for the drying process of a bit of polyfiller and just want to get straight on with the decorating. I'd rather do the job properly and be patient.

PS. I must confess my recomendation of 2-3 coats of emulsion is for cielings (which usually are white) but i would still recommend putting a blanket coat of white emulsion over the lining paper. What this then does is seal it, and assists in hiding the joins. Also, if you happen to still notice any imperfections you can still fill them, it wont harm the lining paper in any way. You may be applying wallpaper as a finish for all i know, but my advice applies if you are having an emulsion finish.

Er..they have probably done it by now,,three years after they asked the question.
