Hello Oh Knowledgeable ones

I have got a question relating to what fixings to use when framing a roof.

In a ‘normal’ simple roof that consists of joists, purlins, wall plates and rafters what fixings are used at each position?

In my extension, where I have fitted floor joists on Jiffy hangers, the hangers have about 20 of the twist nails holding them to the ledger board, and then 4 (2 each side) into the joists.

For the roof though, I need some advice. I have got the BCO coming round on Friday to discuss it, but like always, I would like to be armed with info from you guys, so that I am prepared for the conversation.

I have managed to borrow a Paslode Framing Nailer from my father in law, (awesome piece of kit) and those ribbed nails are rock solid once they are fired in.

These are the fixing points that I am not sure about…..

1. Fixing the wall plates to the wall – Do I bed them on mortar? And/or screw them into the blocks?

2. Rafters to Wall plates – Do I fire nails in at about 45°? What length nails and how many?

3. Joists to rafters – I am assuming - M12 stud all the way through, and one of those sharp toothed connector washers between the pieces of timber.

4. Joists to wall plates – Same as Rafters ?

5. Rafters to purlins – are they attached, or do the rafters just rest on them?

6. Rafters to ridge – Nails ?

Cheers
Gary

With a nailer, you'd use 90mm nails for all of it and two per fixing

And straps about 1-1.5m for the wallplate

Simple as that !

Sounds good to me, and plenty of opportunity to use the nailer !

And I bet you with the paslode in your hand , you will use more than two nails in every joint....

Fire away..... :)

Fire away

If only...
Paslodes are rubbish. Have one and its give nothing but trouble misfiring.
Left it in to a paslode approved repair center, parted with £45 quid and still misfires.

LIttle boys and their toys....

Looked after, and respected, they are superb.....
There again... They must be used more than twice a year....

Was using mine every week. Shuttering framing. Have it about a year now.
What bugs me is it was left in to get fixed/serviced and its no better.

Cannot understand... the only time they mis fire is with old gas or abused...

Well luckily for me, the Paslode I have got is borrowed, so if it goes wrong I'll just give it back ! ! !

Seriously though, I have borrowed it on a few occasions and have always found it to be brilliant. Never missed a beat.
