We had our drains blocked again twice in 2 months the who came out today was a sub contractor who advised us not to buy drain rods or the extended pipe for a power washer. he advised us to just call the water company and if you get a nice man he will clear for free. so are they really worth spending 20 quid on a set or should i do as he said and hope that we get a nice man and does it for us for free?

What wrong with buying a set for a simple blockage than wait hours for them to come then line their pockets for a simple job you can do in 10 mins. ;)

Yeah true. the guy who came tonight only used one length to try unblocking till he used his machine. anyone recommend a brand? i was looking at silverline for 15quid but read a review and one said they broke

we've been in our house 7 years now and have had a blocked drain (same place) 3 times. First 2 times I borrowed a neighbours rods, 3rd time I bought a set form B&Q. Don't know whats causing the blockages all the time but the alternative is to dig up the drive or get a firm in every time it blocks. Its a piece of cake using these things but now I'm worried that the cheap ones break???? where do they break??

Don't know how good the ones you buy from the diy sheds are, but i use baileys (LF) rods and the steelflex rods.
They can both be used in both directions where as the diy one's are only any good in one direction as they can unscrew otherwise
But they are abit more expensive.

matz not sure it didn't say but that just put me off when i read this review on the silverlines. This drain rod set may be cheap but will cost you more than you think. Two of the rods snapped on first use, so i will now have to go and buy some better quality ones. Before buying this set i used to borrow a higher quality set to clear a drain that blocks regularly, the better rods allways performed as expected. Avoid these and spend more on quality. You have been warned!

Have you not looked at the cause of the blockage?
Fix that and you wont need to call anyone!

migen the blockage seems to be just normal waste. with a bit of lime scale

we have had 2 blocks in 2 months but as far i know these are the only 2 in 10 years. brought the place from a very old family friend well Anglian water used his jet down it the first time after he sorted the problem

Normal waste wouldnt block a drain.....normally.
You might have a displaced joint that is leaking and washing away the backfill around the pipe.
Get yourself a set of rods, and a small jet wash and clean it all out. Find a chamber downstream and slip a plunger up to see it at both ends.
It might also be worth having a camera put up the drain to check your joints, and root penetration or cracks. Your buildings insurance might even cover that. Worth a phonecall.

....and stop your missus throwing girlie stuff down the pan!

If it happens again shortly i'd be inclined to get a closer inspection to see why.

i tell her not too but she says she don't but i don't believe her. funny enough i was looking at a camera put down there on ebay just for peace of mind. if its a damage pipe that's gonna be fun as i suspect pipe runs under the 2 storey extension. only reason i think that is when the guy was using the pressure jet it sounded like it was below my feet.
