I'm looking to make a shed in the garden and was thinking about using 18mm ply for the walls. I'll probably hide the ply later with some kind of nicer looking finish. The question is though, even though the structural stuff is light, solid and made from spruce - can you get it waterproof enough to stand our wet weather? It'll be about 10 x 8 so I'll need a few sheets. It's only about £25 from Selco. What would you do?

Actually the external stuff is only about £30 so I guess there's not point taking the risk. I'd still be interested in what people think though, it would definitely be lighter to handle.

Oh and while we are at it, what do you think of OSB outdoors - even though it looks rubbish?

I built a 'shed' which was 6m wide x 3m depth and 2.4m high.

I made a 4 x 2 frame then clad the outside with construction ply 18mm (shuttering ply)

The ply started to come apart slightly after 12 months, I did plan to cover the ply with t&g or featheredge going horizontal around the build, but I divorced the ex and moved.

That's what I was thinking might happen. I too will probably feather edge it when I see some cheap on Gumtree or whatever. If you were building a shed today - what would you do?

BTW, what sort of spacing did you use between your frame timbers?

wouldve thought marine ply would do the job?

osb,why not try chipboard.probably last as long.

when i built my shed 5"[109mm coverage ] txg pressure treated ship lap was then a similar price to 18mm ply
as in 9 planks equal 1m wide with a 2mm gap and each metre was £1.10 so 9x £1.10=£10 a square metre with an 8x4 sheet being a fraction less than 3 square metres

my set up is shiplap/ insulation / 12mm ply /on the walls
18mm ply floor and roof with insulation above covered with 6mm ply

Whatever ply you use should be fine given the right protection, just look at the majority of construction sites, they have a ply hoarding encompassing the sites. If you're planning on covering it in the future then it really doesn't matter what you protect the ply with as long as it does the job and keeps the ply dry.

I used osb internally for the structure with 3x2 , then insulated and covered with polythene sheet then clad exterior with ship-lap.
