hi. I've lifted carpets to find soft grey material stuck to the hardwood floorboards with what looks like tar. Does anyone know what this is and why it was used. It's only in one room in the house. Thank you.
Quite probably underlay paper. is it the same thickness as a thick envelope? Often used to cover gaps in the boards and also to prevent the carpet from sticking to the floor. The "tar" may well be residue left from a previous floor covering such as parquet flooring (laid on hot bitumen), bitumen flooring or linoleum
Hi, yes thats about the thickness, and the material is actually like the material you would get in a padded envelope if you tore it open, that fibrousy padding. Thank you.
