Anyone done this? My local timber merchants are doing 22 x 150 sawn treated at a decent price, I've been using it for a lashup (fixing to bowed and dropped joists to give me a level ish structure to support a floor) - the original plan was to use 22mm T & G chipboard (which I loathe but it is a lot cheaper than timber T & G, £6,50/sq m against about £20/sq m) for the floor but....

The 22 x 150 comes in at about £6.80/sq m, I can probably get them planed (in their thicknesser) for another £20 for a floors worth and either shiplap or tongue and groove them with my router (time is not a big issue on the House of Pain).

Ultimately there'll be carpet on top so surface finish isn't a big issue- is the stuff prone to warping/twisting/splintering as it dries out, can it take standard floor loading, is it all going to end in tears?

It is quite a coarse grain (must be quick grown) and has a bit more flex than redwood T & G. also cuts more easily.

Ta for your thoughts

carcasing can be really poor quality can cup twist warp
it can be fast growing with growth ring miles apart
if you have any standards source the correct material at the best price rather than try to make an inferior material do the job

Yeah, I really don't have £20/sq m in the budget for proper floorboards and I bitterly resent paying £6.50 for chipboard. Ho hum.......

I boarded my shed floor with it (because it was cheap) it's got a fair bit of spring in it though. Nowhere near good enough for a proper floor.

My thoughts although late would be use 18mm ply. It's double the cost of chip board but half of t&g and definitely the best value.

There's a lot of variation even in the dozen I got for my bodge job- some are much finer grained and denser than others. Went chipboard in the end, nogged and heavily screwed down and so far no annoying squeaks. Got several more floors to do, the kitchen and hallway will def be timber of some sort (might try the ply in one of the bedrooms and see how that goes)
