Just to update anyone who maybe considering something similar,
The kit i ordered works exactly as i wanted.
It has perm live, switched live, neutral and earth from the switch side.
Has 230v gu10 connection on the load side.
LED indicator to show its connected and charging.
I have it wired such that all my fittings in the landing come on and off with the switch, if power is removed to the circuit/CU, the single lamp illuminates.
costly solution, but exactly what i needed it to do.

so what lamp are you using and how long do they say it lasts in emergency mode.
Im quessing there designed for low wattage led rather than halogen.
Since your post I have seen a few similar advertised, they seem to be a fairly recent thing, I assume possible due to the advance in battery technology.

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I posted within it originally! Does anyone know any suppliers who currently offer these? I have spent ages looking around, and there are plenty for 12v lamps, but mine are 230v, or the few that do exist are £100+!

MR16 and MR11 refer to the size of the lamps 2'' or 1 3/8"" nothing more, and certainly not voltage. 230v GU10 lamps are usually MR16.
The post you’re correcting is a year old. Do you have nothing better to do?

Likely no demand, most tend to leave the fitting alone now and fit a remote pin hole led emergency elsewhere, fits in a 30 mm hole.
Would like to know how Unclebobs one performed, i have my doubts how the battery copes

Hello, so far I've had no issues (but no long unplanned power outages either!)
I tested mine for a duration, after initial charge while doing some tidying work (testing and marking old consumer unit circuits), well over an hour and light was on with no noticeable dimming. I'm aiming to get a new cu installed in loft early next year so power will be off again for that, so will see how it does then.

Hey, that's the problem I had, and reading back, you are looking to put it exactly where I have, bottom of the stairs/ close to front door... Ie light the way out.
As I said in my earlier post, it's costly, but seems to do what I need, without having to have a different light fitting.
It's a meter long, but is flexible, and can easily be pushed up a 65mm cutout for a spotlight. All wires are on one side, so you can do the wiring, then push battery pack up (the long bit!) Then wiring, and then push up the light fitting itself. It comes with an led which I made a seperate hole for, let comes off the mount so can be used with or without the mount (35mm). I quite like it as it lights the bottom of the stairs without additional lights on (when I'm going to bed etc)
Just to update for those who may be interested, with a 7w led lamp, the emergency light stayed on for approx 7 hours from full charge to shut off due to low power...
