blue/grey powder in loft, what is it?

My house was built in 1947. When I first entered the loft (which I know was used very little by the previous few generations of owners) I discovered a coating of thick black/grey/blue dust on everything.

I just put this down to having no underlay/membrane beneath the tiles (lots of moving air up there), plus the dust/dirt which enters from outside.

Can't answer the asbestos question but any dust breathed in in large quantities is harmful (over time).

If you're going to use the loft a lot, I'd have it cleaned out. If you're not, I'd just cover what you store up there and not worry!
