Breaking up concrete (perhaps a path?) below ground level

Have ordered plants for new hedge. Just finished cultivating the site only to find that there is (what I assume to be) a buried concrete path along the final bit of the planting area (final 3 to 4 meters). The concrete is 25 cm ish below the surface.

I guess am concerned that it's protecting utilities, drains not in this area as far as I can tell. However water gas and electricity are on this side of the house.

How do I ensure I don't damage something important?

If it were me in your position i would just get on with. Any cables and pipework etc will be deep below the surface, well certainly well deep enough for what you're doing.

However, i would exercise caution along the way and start by exposing the entire concreted area to find out just how far it extends in an attempt to identify what it is / might have been. A base to a greenhouse, long since gone outbuilding or loo, or a bbq or a pathway etc. You never know it may be a capped off / filled in bunker or cess pit!

Then i'd just get on with breaking it up and getting rid of it. I'd break up and get rid of all of it myself rather than just enough to get your job done.

It's done god knows what it was, I only know it was crap.

A path I think.
