Hello,

New to the forum/mechanics and need some help, so I decided to tackle the job of replacing the front subframe (radiator support) on my 2006 renault clio. However, when I was unbolting it from the side I noticed that the beam connecting the cross member to the car had also completely corroded!

Questions.... (I'm a complete newbie.. my first job on a car...)

1) How do I unbolt this beam, as the bolt can be seen just above my finger/in the second phot but it looks spring loaded???

2) What is this beam/bracket called any links to a replacement? it's on the drivers side.

P.S - Any videos of the replacement of this subframe support bar would be appreciated!

Thanks All!

Please also check at the back of the subframe.....where the under tray almost touches the body.
Notorious rust area here.
John :)

It's just a steady bar, but I'm not sure if it's available as an aftermarket part. Might be a trip to Renault dealer.

Do check all the subframe and supports though as burnerman says

Ah... I'm getting flashbacks! I suffered a front subframe bush change on my sister's horrible Clio of the same vintage.

Secondly, I'd call that complete assembly a "radiator support". The frame to the left of it, in the photos, is what I'd call the "front subframe". Usually, it's the two big bushes at the back of the front subframe (where it secures to the bodyshell) that fail, and the whole subframe (complete with front wishbones) can float about. They are an absolute PIG to change. They're press-fitted into the subframe. Often, garages will just change the entire subframe (I think they're abut £400).

Anyway, getting back to your radiator support, it looks slightly different to the one on my sister's car? The back of it, has a couple of "pegs" that just poke loosely into the front of the subframe.

The bit that you're pointing to, looks different on my sister's car though? The top of it should be bent into a right angle and trapped under the same bolt as the matching bar on the leading edge of the "subframe proper"? You can see it in this video at about 6 mins 40 seconds.
