"Daniel Thomas and Jim Pickard in London
Published 5 HOURS AGO
Updated21:39

UK ministers plan to ban the resale of tickets for live events above their original cost, in an aggressive crackdown on touts and resellers who sharply increase the price of admission to concerts and sports events.

In plans to be announced on Wednesday, reselling a ticket above face value will be outlawed, government and industry figures told the Financial Times.

The big profits made by resellers were highlighted last year when thousands of Oasis fans complained about the cost of buying tickets to see the rock band in 2025.

Some tickets for Oasis shows at Wembley Stadium in London were listed at more than £4,000 — well above their original value.

New legislation being drawn up by the Labour government will also cap service fees charged by resale platforms to stop price limits being undermined by the addition of hidden costs to a ticket."

FT.com

Good.

Unless the name of the ticket holder is on the ticket, resale of tickets will always happen

That said allowing big ticket vendors to also operate resale systems isn’t a great idea

Glastonbury goes to great lengths to prevent resale by using photo id at all stages of the transaction. People were paying more for Oasis tickets which were re sellable. But if there is a high demand for an event like the Oasis reunion, what is the objection?

I don't see the issue with ticket touting. Concerts aren't a necessity, many of them are only lip-syncing anyway. If people are daft enough to pay daft prices then let them.

What part of capitalism will be banned next?

Banning resale for higher than event price misses the point. Dynamic pricing enriches the promoters, and this measure will make them richer. It’s using the stereotype of greedy touts to close down competition.

Are you against the fixing of all things beneficial to the consumer? Interesting you labelled fraudulent corporate greed as 'capitalism' though. <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f44d.png" class="smilie smilie--emoji" loading="lazy" width="64" height="64" alt="(y)" title="Thumbs Up (y)" data-smilie="24"data-shortname="(y)" />

Usually market-rigging has the opposite of the intended effect.

The energy price cRap is a very good example. It was well-intentioned and was meant to limit price rises, and did at first. But now it's ended competition and become a minimum price. Wholesale prices have fallen but the retailers have no reason to cut prices as most consumers don't shop around any more. So they all behave as a cartel, we all end up paying more and the big companies take all our money as extra profit.

Generally, you should have either a free market OR state control. As soon as you have any sort of mix then those with the power take advantage of the situation.

This ticketing thing just sounds like Ticketmaster don't like someone other than them making obscene profits and their PR departments have managed to convince the politicians and gullible public into thinking there's some sort of right vs wrong battle.

Can’t see this helping much. Tickets need to be used with the users name on them, then that can be used to check ID - thus making resale much harder

No doubt Starmer will be along shortly to explain that if we all had his mandatory human rights eliminating people tracking and control app on our phones then concert ticket prices for geriatrics miming one-hit wonders from the 1980s would be lower.
