Plasterboard on solid stone external wall?

I live in a house that dates to about 1800 with fairly thick solid stone walls.

The external bedroom wall has lining paper on it, which is tending to come off at the vertical edges. Ideally, I'd like to wallpaper the wall with a decorative wallpaper. But worried it would not adhere properly to walls if they are damp.

But I'm concerned that there may be damp given the way the current lining paper is behaving. A decorator looked at it and recommended I get the wall plasterboarded, then he would have a nice even surface to apply wallpaper.

I wonder whether this would cause problems, having heard horror stories about internal wall insulation in old homes, need to allow damp to escape etc. Would plasterboard trap damp behind it and would that be a problem?

The pointing on the outside looks ok to me. It may not be lime and perhaps it should be - I suspect wouldn't be able to afford to have that facade of house repointed in any case.

What's the best way forward?

I have watched his videos before, some are very informative, but I see he now tries to get people to go to his Patreon account, which I believe is subscription based. I understand him wanting to maximise his income, but it does come across as a bit "bait and switch". That said, I am not dismissing his advice.

Insulating solid walls in old houses is fine. Sure, you'll find stories online - "Live in a house built before 1900? Here's the one thing builders say you must never do" etc. etc. Don't read any of that, unless you're sure it is (a) not clickbait designed to make money for someone, and (b) not anecdotes from one person with an isolated bad experience.

Do consider battening the wall and adding some insulation. There are various ways to do it. Possibly the most difficult parts are detailing around windows, and dealing with electrics. I've used wood fibre, with a gap between it and the stone - but there are other options.

I don't really get the patreon thing either. I understand why it's there and why some would like access to the chats but is there anything you can't get for free or wait for? although if you are doing up a house it could be useful as a one stop shop.
As for the original question.

On Charliediy channel he has used every method it seems to insulate and board old walls, so it is a good place to watch everything and decide which is best

I'm not sure I could afford adding insulation as well and would be hesitant to do so given all the controversies. I'm not a DIY person, not physically big/strong enough. Grew up in house without central heating, used to relatively cold temperatures. Just wanting a wall dry enough to paper.
But is wallpaper itself also a problem?
My understanding from what I've read is that solid walls should allow water to evaporate on both sides. So any kind of finish that prevents that is a problem. I wonder if wallpaper is too impermeable? But then, surely wallpaper was used through the 19th century on external walls, how did they manage?
I should add that my walls are about 22 inches thick and I'm in an area that gets high rainfall (west of Pennines).
