    Thermal store question

Sorry my post has crossed with yours in the ether! My pellet boiler can modulate from 25 kW down to 5 kW as/when necessary. Would it necessarily cycle on/off or might it just tick-over at 5 kW?

    Thermal store question

What would be wrong with nothing? What advantage does "22 minutes worth" of heat bestow on my C/H system?

    Thermal store question

Please give reasons why I would be insane?

    Thermal store question

I have a 25kW wood pellet boiler that provides DHW and runs the C/H system. The C/H system is open vented i.e. has the traditional F&E tank in the attic. A 400 litre thermal store forms part of the C/H system. IMO the system was badly designed in as much as the 400L. thermal store is a waste of...

Sacrificial anode in central heating system

I hadn't considered solid particles of the anode floating about - fair point. I have tested the pH of the fluid in the C/H system and it is 7 i.e. neutral as opposed to acidic. Is it possible that there are localised "clumps" of flux in the rads so that although the overall pH is neutral, there...

Sacrificial anode in central heating system

BigSnoopy01 - thanks for your response. This is from the Kamco website: "Occasionally we hear of a system which continues to gas after every thing else has been tried, and for no plausible reason. Chemists term this ‘runaway’ corrosion and fortunately it is rare. In such cases, we can...

Sacrificial anode in central heating system

Thanks to all who responded to my post. I am determined to get to the bottom of this problem. Rather than reply to each individual post, I have answered you all in one shot! Muggles: thanks for your response. All radiators are uniformly hot all over except the highest one, which is the towel...

Sacrificial anode in central heating system

Despite having excess Fernox in my C/H system and no black sludge visible when I drain off a little water from any radiator, I still get hydrogen* forming which I understand is indicative of corrosion. (*blue flame when lighting the gas during venting of the rad). Would it be of any benefit to...

When is an extension not an extension?

Thanks for your input. I think I have enough info now. I'll report back in due course and let you know how we got on. Gofer.

When is an extension not an extension?

Clive12345 - thanks for pointing this out, I missed that. The extra area provided by the doors and windows I am covering up would help of course and equates to a further approx 5 sq m in my case, so up to 9 sq m in total. Enough for the bifold doors and one other window of 1 sq m. but not for...

When is an extension not an extension?

In answer to your first 4 points: yes, yes, yes and yes. Going for an extension limits me to a glazing area of 25% of the floor area i.e. 25% of 16 sq m in my case which equates to just 4 sq m of glass. The bifold doors would use about 8 sq m alone! I would like to keep the external doors anyway...

When is an extension not an extension?

Freddy, Woody and Richard – many thanks for your individual inputs. To my mind the crucial question still remains: what is a conservatory (as far as my LABC dept is concerned)? If I ask my local BC officer I fear this will simply open the proverbial “can of worms” or can I ask it as a general...

When is an extension not an extension?

Nickjb - see my response to Clive above. Would that work do you think?

When is an extension not an extension?

Clive - yes, I am leaning that way. What I really want is to have the maximum amount of glass along the front of the orangery (a row of bifold doors) but with a solid, well insulated roof (maybe with a roof lantern or similar), hence I do not want to be restricted to the "25% of floor area"...

When is an extension not an extension?

It will be a sun lounge. It will have a 4-in-1 trailing socket from the house for table lamps and maybe a radio and/or TV. No plumbing. Heating undecided as yet but obviously not an extension of the C/H! No plumbing.

When is an extension not an extension?

I have looked at other similar threads which have appeared on this forum but I’m still not sure of the true situation. Also, yes, I have studied Part L1B of the Building Regs but I’m not clear as to whether the exemption I am seeking applies in my case. Can anyone please tell me if I build a...

    Location of gas boiler flue

OK. Have checked with Vaillant. Yes, this is an unusual situation which is not covered by the list of different scenarios in their technical manual! The great unknown is whether there would be sufficient air flow into the boiler (and exhaust flow from the boiler) with our scenario of having two...

    Location of gas boiler flue

No problem - will do, IF NECESSARY! Will check with Vaillant in the morning.

    Location of gas boiler flue

It's a Vaillant ecoPlus 837. According to the on-line manual for this boiler the flue must be at least 200 mm from an internal or external corner. So if we ensure that the edge of the new conservatory is at least 200 mm from the flue then I think we are ok, as it is more than 200 mm from the...
