    Painting matt over silk walls..

The fact it’s silk paint underneath will only affect the adhesion, and whether or not that’s an issue is debatable, as per pps. (fwiw I’d just wash down with sugar soap before painting). Assuming the paint is taking ok, then the fact the old colour showing through is because of the quality of...

    Dulux Satinwood paint reacting!

I’ve recently been using this paint https://www.brewers.co.uk/product/AA0144001J and the accompanying primer https://www.brewers.co.uk/product/AA0146001J to paint bare wood and bare mdf. 2 coats of the primer and one coat of paint has gone on fine. Haven’t tried the paint over factory primed...

    Cheaper alternative to Dulux Trade

Just been to Tool station, they have Dulux trade vinyl Matt 10L for £41! I get an additional 10% off there so it’s a no brainer!

    Cheaper alternative to Dulux Trade

Isn’t that quite normal for the mist coat? Contract Matt is not hard wearing at all and I often find quite it powdery/chalky. Vinyl Matt is better for the finishing coat after using contract matt to mist coat new plaster. On the other hand I believe you can use diluted vinyl Matt on fresh...

    Cheaper alternative to Dulux Trade

Sorry I got confused I saw the negative reviews on B&Q https://www.diy.com/departments/leyland-trade-contract-white-matt-emulsion-paint-12l/290129_BQ.prd And that’s the contact Matt rather than vinyl. The £14 wickes Matt emulsion looks good value for mist coat on new plaster but wouldn’t use it...

    Cheaper alternative to Dulux Trade

Thanks, the reviews of the Leland on Screwfix are rather mixed and Wickes do a white vinyl Matt for £35 too. Might give each of these a go, at least for overprinting and see how it goes, saving £15 a tub adds up.

    Bathroom ceiling nightmare

Given the plaster looks bare was the most cost too thick so sat on the plaster rather than soaking in? Or it’s the plaster highly polished/smooth?

    Cheaper alternative to Dulux Trade

This question has been asked before but most posts seems to be from several years back. Had some building work done and aiming to repaint most of the house over the coming year, I usually buy Dulux Trade paint and have done so for years. This is because even though it’s more expensive in my...

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

thought i should get round to updating this thread... well, i got the job done in the end, went with: - washing off wallpaper paste, - light sanding by hand - 2 coats of thinned trade emulsion - lining paper hung horizontally - 2 coats emulsion looks pretty okay, the joints in the...

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

It was built in 1980. The wallpaper I stripped had been up since the house was built (or shortly after).

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

Many thanks for all the replies so far. OK, so I have spent the weekend successfully realising that filling and sanding is going to take me forever and a day, longer if I want to get it 'right'. Steaming off the paint seems about the same, with added mess and the risk of blown plaster. I'm...

    Sh*t jokes forum.

Dear Abby, I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision. I've suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs...phone rings, but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the...

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

OK so walls are washed and sanded now, but I'm a bit stuck choosing a 'fine surface filler' for the job... the paint layer that's peeling is really thin (<0.1mm), and there's a lot of small(ish) patches covering a large area of the wall. I'm aiming to minimise any sanding required after filling...

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

Gotcha, thanks. You live and learn, eh? Interestingly, two of the walls are pretty much OK, even with the dry stripping. They are internal walls. It's the two outside 'brick' walls that the underlying paint has come off.

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

Your guess is absolutely correct there! In my defence it was the other half that did it  Will try the advised, was hoping to paint rather than paper though. Pardon my ignorance but can you explain what a 'blinding coat' is?

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

Thanks for the reply, I think you're right, it is the mist coat. Regrettably a bit more care in taking the paper off might have left it intact. Anyway, sounds like I've got more than I bargained for! This is just the box room, I've got the other bedrooms to do too, might just have get used to...

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

Good question, I'm not 100% sure actually. Thinking about it, it could be a mist coat on the plaster I guess. How could I find out for sure? Try to dissolve some of it it in water?

    Painting over flaking wallpaper primer

I'm painting a previously wallpapered room. Stripping old ugly embossed wallpaper was surprisingly easy, but it left a thin layer of white stuff underneath, which I assume is wallpaper primer or sizing? There's a shiny layer of wallpaper paste visible on top of this. This white layer is...
