Looks like a composite to me, at least metal faced, as there seems to be a seam at the front leading edge, but difficult to see from the pic. As mentioned scrape some paint off.

I haven't done a composite door, but for painting plastic I find a single generous flowing coat of non-drip gloss gives a nice finish it is safer to take a door off to paint it to avoid runs, if you can do the edges and fancy bits first

Composite door. Looking great and no painting

I'm unimpressed by plastic doors. A wooden door and frame typically lasts more than a hundred years. But unless it is protected by an open porch will need regular painting. Composite doors are quite sturdy.

Previous owners painted over a navy composite door with a brighter blue paint. It has started to bubble off and chip quite badly. I would like to repaint it with rustoleum UPVC paint but unsure about the steps to take before painting. How would you go about preparing the door before painting?

Edit: My wife tells me it’s a composite door, not UPVC. What do I know? As above. Our front door which has been on for about 15 years now is looking like it needs a new coat of paint - it’s definately a lot yellower than the white frame. I think being south facing, the sun has done its worse...

Looks like a composite door.... that somebody has tried to sand? They're timber cores with GRP skins, the colour is part of the skin of the material. Overpaintable? Yes with the right paint. It won't have the robustness of the original surface though. Nozzle

I want to add metal/plastic or composite(depending on price) cladding to the 4 external sides of my shed to cut down on painting/maintinace each year..Can I install sheets to each side of the shed by just attaching them directly onto the existing wooden cladding? or do I need to use battons...

I agree to use high-ed paint sealant products, it works pretty well. There are many good brands to choose (like mezerna power protect ultra, nano composite crystal, blackfire wet diamond and others). Check the opinions and see.

I see composite front doors all over the place looking nasty and faded and you can't paint them easily, and you're sort of lumbered with them once you've 'upgraded a thermal element'. Is the existing door actually rotten? Is there any space for an external porch?

My point was, if your current door failed due to lack of maintenance, maybe composite is the best way to go for you! If it was not lack of maintenance are you are prepared to paint every few years then that is fine. Sounds like it was either not a quality timber or not fully sealed or...
