Getting ready to mix and pour a foundation

It should only be a short walk down the side of the house to haul the materials through so will probably mix on the drive and then wheel a barrow full through and pour. I’ve just been doing some probing and looks like the existing foundations are only 150mm deep.

Getting ready to mix and pour a foundation

Thanks for the replies all. Much appreciated. I’ll look at replacing the sand/gravel with ballast - seems a good idea and saves on one measurement at least. The reason I’m wanting to mix and pour myself is purely financial. I’m doing this on a budget so saving £350 on pumped concrete and...

Getting ready to mix and pour a foundation

Hi all, Is there a rough guide on how much water is required as a 'part' in the 1:2:4 mix that I plan on using for the foundations of my garage extension/workshop? I want to make sure I've got things right before I order and get started. I think I'll be needing 2.3 cubic meters of mix for...

DPC level and Garage personnel door

I've been looking at a Hormann 2001 personnel door, which comes with a steel frame. Doing the measurements using that door I should be able to set it on the DPC after all - original plans were for a taller upvc door. Thanks for the info.

DPC level and Garage personnel door

Hi all, I'm measuring up for a workshop to be built on the back of my existing detached garage and want to put a personnel door in. My question is about the DPC. This is 2 courses up from the patio floor, and if I measure up 1989mm (which seems to be the size of the doors I've found) it takes...

    Garage extension

Ok that’s good to know. We’ve cleared all the work with the neighbour. A bricky we had round suggested only about a foot for the foundations as it’s a small single skin extension to the existing garage. Will continue to investigate.

Retaining wall foundation and patio drainage

Yes the remaining part of the old patio will be coming up tomorrow and the ground taken down as level as possible to the target of 150mm deep. The wall is already down - that was last nights job. And tonight I’ve levelled that area so it’s lookong better. There are some obvious high points so...

Retaining wall foundation and patio drainage

Thanks for the reply. The ground seems to be a mix of general mud for the top layer, then about 3 inches of sandy material in the middle and clay for the rest. I’ve been here 10 years and can’t say it gets water logged, just the general wet ground when we’ve had a lot of heavy rain. Also, the...

Retaining wall foundation and patio drainage

I’ve dug out roughly the area for our new patio and want to get started on the retaining wall. The wall will only be about 2’ high - so what sort of foundations would I be looking at for that? I understand that I would need to dig or about 1’ further than the wall to allow for backfilling? I...

Fence posts with wall around patio

We’re about to undertake a job in our garden where we will be extending the patio and fencing the entire garden. We are planning on concrete posts, 300mm gravel boards and 5ft panels. The patio sits lower than the garden so we would but putting a wall around it much like the existing layout. My...

    Garage extension

OK great, I'll take a look at those requirements and see where that leads us.

    Garage extension

Hi all, as part of our garden works we're looking to extend our garage by aprx 6-8 foot. It is a single brick flat roof garage. Would this sort of work require any planning permission? Thanks

What is this on my concrete path?

Ok that would make sense, next time we get a volume of rain I’ll check to see what’s occurring around there. Thanks all

What is this on my concrete path?

It is a pain. The house is a standard 2 storey semi detached. No services at that point of the house or garage. It is almost like it’s a marker or end point for the path as it is against the jut in the brick work at the back corner. There is the jut in the brick work at the front corner but no step.

What is this on my concrete path?

Not had a problem with it so assuming its ok. Question still remains on what the hell this step is for

What is this on my concrete path?

Ah, I see what you mean. That is a bit of an optical illusion. The DPC is the same level all the way round, there is a jut out in the back corner which is why it looks like it changes level. So yes, from the concrete of the pavement it is 2 courses, but as the patio is sloped at the back of the...

    I don't get it?

What is this on my concrete path?

What is the DPC? The whole patio area is sloped, but pretty sure thats down to very poor ground prep when it was done by the landlord.
