Thanks. The only info I could find on cutting back was if you do it in the spring, cut back to 10cm above ground etc. You’re not advocating I do that now, are you?

On closer inspection, leaves v similar shape to those of lilac. However mine have a serrated edge, which is more suggestive of alder or hazel? Attached images are front of back of our leaves. Thanks

Hi again Decided to go for the nuclear option. The problem is the intruder seems to have already formed a wide and hard root. It’s also adjacent to the hypericum roots, so don’t want to damage those. How would you proceed from here? Thanjs

Thanks again. Noted re treatment of stubborn weeds. I have Weedol. Is that comparable to Glyphosate? Re the non mulched area- are you just recommending hoeing/weedkiller to prepare for bedding plants? Back of bed-should have said this problem exacerbated by next door being empty for years.

Just followed your advice re mulch from cut grass. Obviously not optimum height or coverage. How would you treat remainder of bed? I notice the hoe not removing all root systems. Do I have to do a second sweep? Thank you again.

Many thanks. Have tried compost and horse manure without much success. No compost heap unfortunately. Have just cut front and back lawns, but doubt whether enough for a 4-6” covering?
