    Thanks for reply big-all. No the stair case is not a space saver. i have checked the angle again in several places and it still comes out at 50 but i guess i will have to work with what ive got.

    Hi, i am in the process of fitting new spindles and i thought the pitch of the stair case was 45 degrees but i have just found that the pitch is 50 degrees. Is this normal-the house was built in the 30's? Thanks

    Thanks ellisjean that is a good idea. i will clamp my baserail beteewn 2 pieces of wood and then just slide it up for each hole. I will have to make the base on the drill bigger but nothing a bit of ply will not sort out.
