Discovered old chimney flue in damp kitchen ceiling - best way to seal off?

I had a damp patch in my ceiling, and after tearing out a portion, I discovered a disused chimney flue. Following it up, it terminated in the loft. Both ends are open, but I’d ideally like to prevent the problem of moisture hitting the kitchen ceiling again in the future. Is it ok to seal off...

Extremely dirty eaves space - is it possible to clean rockwool, I should I replace?

Thanks, I’ve got an HEPA extractor with a brand new bag ready and waiting. It’s going to be a slow, terrible job, as the ceiling is lathe, but I think I’ll be glad I did it in the long run. I’ve got a coverall, gloves, mask, and goggles. Going to seal myself in the loft and bag and vacuum as I...

Extremely dirty eaves space - is it possible to clean rockwool, I should I replace?

Cheers mate, already back from Wickes! Did exactly that (went with glass again because it was half the price). This is going to be an awful job. I grabbed myself a full body suit while I was there. 9 quid well spent.

Extremely dirty eaves space - is it possible to clean rockwool, I should I replace?

Nevermind, going to replace the whole lot, bring it up to 270 with some loft legs and then board over that instead. Easier to just roll up the old crap and start again.

Extremely dirty eaves space - is it possible to clean rockwool, I should I replace?

Hiya, thanks for the reply. I have a combi boiler, so the cylinder isn't a consideration, but my main thing here is that I'm not trying to complicate things, I'm just trying to find out if I should clean this rockwool or replace it completely.

Extremely dirty eaves space - is it possible to clean rockwool, I should I replace?

Hi everyone, Trying to figure out the best course of action here. I have plans to lay a floor in my eaves space, just to make access a bit easier for some eaves cupboards I plan to build down the line, and I'm concerned about the absolute state the previous owners left the space in. Take a...

Help me understand fire regs for my loft conversion

I don't know what this means, I'm sorry. The photos I've posted make sense to me. They show the open plan dining room, the loft room in it's previous state, and the loft room after. I'm not sure what else a plan could outline that isn't visible in the pictures.

Help me understand fire regs for my loft conversion

Ah, OK, I think I get you. Forgive me, because I don't know the specific terminology. So originally, in 2003, the loft conversion was completed. It was an open plan conversion, where the loft was accessible via a standard staircase, with banisters, etc.. When we bought the house, we took the...

Help me understand fire regs for my loft conversion

Loft conversion was done in 2003, I believe. The first pictures are just from the estate agent when we bought, I think that might be his floating hand haha. I don’t have any plans for my work, I’m afraid, the after pic I posted is definitely better than any drawing I can do. I’m almost...

Help me understand fire regs for my loft conversion

Hi there I bought a house with an existing open plan loft conservation. The house is two floors and the loft. Bottom floor: Hallway leading to small, open plan dining room, directly next to the staircase: You go up the stairs to the middle floor, then up the stairs again to the loft...

plasterboard making cracking/tearing noises while screwing to timber

Sorry, no, I think I explained incorrectly. So what I have is a top plate that is out of line by about 3mm. When I screw the top of the board in, it makes some cracking noises because it's straining to pull the board that extra 3mm to close the gap. Does that make sense? It's not making any...

plasterboard making cracking/tearing noises while screwing to timber

Hi everyone, So I know WHY it's happening, obviously the timber is slightly out of plumb, and it's bending the plasterboard when I screw it in along one edge. My question is how serious is this long term? It's only along one edge, one of the boards. As I was screwing, I could feel the board...

Internal partition wall - does it need a vapour barrier?

Hi everyone I have a loft conversion that previously had an open staircase into the space. In an effort to make it into a proper bedroom, I’ve removed the bannister and replaced it with a 3x2 wall Once it’s finished, I’ll be adding 50mm insulation and then taping with foil and covering with...

Can I cut away this small piece of plasterboard batten in my ceiling

Definitely not a ceiling joist, it’s just a piece of 2x1. I don’t think anyone would ever use that as a joist lol, that’s the absolute least likely scenario. Regardless, I cut it yesterday and it’s rock solid still, not even a wiggle.

Can I cut away this small piece of plasterboard batten in my ceiling

I'm really just looking to find out if cutting through the batten is likely to cause problems under the circumstances I describe. Thanks
