First Time tiling DIY - Hearth - Part DUX

In this tutorial he is using a 8mm notch trowel for the same tiles. If I used a 8mm or even 10mm very carefully, I might be able to gain 4-5mm in height? In that case I would have 5mm+7mm, which might be acceptable.... what do you think? Or any other ideas to gain a few extra mms in height?

First Time tiling DIY - Hearth - Part DUX

Thanks. Didn't have the time to do tiling today as well, but I finished to put the cement boards down. Now I will have to wait probably until next weekend for the tilling. One issue is that I seem to have pressed the boards quite tight or maybe I should've used 8mm instead of 6mm notches. The...

Ok, google tells me it is fine to use either side. Both pieces now cut to size, unfortunately during cutting/snapping small bits broke off on the lower left and top right... I think I will just live with it and just place the loose pieces in into the adhesive... I bought mapei keraflex maxi...

First Time tiling DIY - Hearth - Part DUX

Alrighty, first rookie mistake... Whilst scribing and cutting the exact shape onto the hardibacker, I have now spent half hour multitooling the perfect shape onto the wrong side. Meaning, the half that goes on one side, would now have to go topside down into the space... and I can't just use...

    Multi gym

I am gonna go with with a different angle here... Ditch the multi gym, I recommend some dumbbells, but mostly barbell exercises. Get Mark Rippetoe's starting strength and go from there. 5x5s is a good way to start building work capacity. You can still build muscle, but even more importantly...

    Alarms - Mains Wired, Interconnected

Yes Aico, I already have two of them, so was planning to get a couple more and wire them up together. My question was more on whether it's worthwhile to fit one in the cellar and if this is standard practice. I guess certainly won't hurt (other than a little more electricity consumption)...as...

    Alarms - Mains Wired, Interconnected

Same reasoning why my sparky put a heat alarm in my loft where I have my battery and inverter. Dusty environment more often then not can give false alarms, so it's common to use heat alarm in such environments according to them. If I can realise the planned cabling routes for the other ones...

Follow-up question on this. What is your view of having a heat alarm in an unconverted damp victorian cellar? My cellar is half-height and looks like this. But it houses the consumer unit. (n.b. the picture is old and I have a new modern CU there now). I always thought the guidline is at least...

Siliconing corners grey and shower tray white.

I've only done very little mastic application, so I'd let others opine. From an optical perspective I would first do the grey down the corner, and then the white along the shower tray on top. I'd also wait for the grey to cure for a couple of hours, before applying the white on top. You can also...

Siliconing corners grey and shower tray white.

Hello, I wouldn't discount using the same grey all over. We had the same discussion and our builder used the same for both and it looks great. Also, any discoloration over the years will be slightly less visible on the grey mastic compared to white one.

    Recommend sockets for me

I fitted Varilight ultimate screwless all over my house. They have a great selection of covers and inserts. I chose this over Schneider Electrics due to price. I am happy with them, no failures so far. If I could turn back time, I might have also considered the new BG Evolve line due to the...

Victorian Mid-Terrace House - Homebuyers Report

I assume you are definitely making plans to have your own L3 Survey done, which is conditional to the transaction going ahead? 6 years is a long time for issues in victorian houses to develop, trust me I have had so many things repaired/updated in the 1.5 years I have lived in my house. Having...

Thanks for responding. Are you saying I should use the 6mm hardibacker and build up, i.e. option 1? I have the 4mm notch trowel for the mosaics, but will pickup another 6-8mm one for the adhesive, when I go to get the hardibacker. Would you still recommend to screw down the hardibacker in...

Checking I've wired a ceiling light correctly (especially earthed)

Risking to state the obvious...you can feed the CPCs from both sides into the base. So a looped_cpc+lamp_cpc into one side and the other looped_cpc enters the base from the other side. Sometimes it's a little easier to maneuver & fit.

First Time tiling DIY - Hearth - Part DUX

Alright, so finally I can proceed with this project! The floor has been laid and looks fantastic. As agreed with the flooring installer, they left the to-be-tiled area untouched and left a clean line. The metal trim is measured, cut, bent and ready and I have everything ready besides the...

    Alarms - Mains Wired, Interconnected

Thanks all. That's good enough for me to at least attempt to hardwire. Hallways and floors still have old carpet and I had them open already once for another issue. Will have a go a this in a couple of weeks' time, too many unfinished other projects need attention first...

    Alarms - Mains Wired, Interconnected

Hello Everyone, FYI >> ca1900 period property, owner occupied, so regs/alarms in theory not required. Regardless, I am looking to improve on this for my family's safety. My property currently has one heat detector in the loft (where I also store my PV batteries) and one interlinked smoke alarm...

    Make of grid/switch/dimmer modules?

They do, and quite customisable. I had to replace a similar switch (dimmer+rocker) recently and bought individually a 2 way plate+mounting grid and then individually the components. All from TLC

One Wire Too Many (in PIR lamp) (Ed.)

I would definitely agree to this. If the switch is already there, connect it even if only infrequently used. Else also maybe some future owner will think... WTflip is this for... When I moved into my current property I had such an inactive swtich and it took a long time for me to find out what...

    Identify these small downlights?

I have recently replaced very similar ones. My guess is MR 11. I bought these in 3000k. As others mentioned, the fitting is held by clips and it should be plug and play, just pull down (Watch fingers for snap recoil) and attach new ones.
