    First time with a router

Well, you were right there; when I sat on the edge of the bed, the bracket pulled its screws out of the leg, and the whole thing collapsed. After all that, and so many days of hair tearing and effort, I am gutted. Back to the f'ing drawing board. I accept that I started this job without...

    First time with a router

Ah, the joys of (a) not knowing what you're doing; (b) buying things on eBay, which are devoid of instructions. I've just finished re-doing them all, and it all seems quite solid now - the fixing screws aren't that long, so I wonder if they'll work loose in time. If I were doing it all again...

    First time with a router

Ah... it seems I have COVID after all. First test when I got ill was negative, now strongly positive  This might explain why my judgement has been even more impaired than usual as I've tried to tackle this **** project. My brain has been really foggy... If I can summon up the...

    First time with a router

Ah. I see. I watched a video of somebody else doing it on YT, and he seemed to do it the way I did - I didn't think to question it. Back to the **** drawing board. Again.

    First time with a router

OK... so I got the timber last week, came down with God-awful cold (you forget how bad they can be, what with worrying about COVID etc), and am struggling to put it all together today. Endless problems and hair-tearing over what should really be quite a simple job, but am at final assembly...

    PIR ceiling light for bathroom?

Hhmmm yeah that one looks good, doesn't it. Maybe have to abandon SF this time!

    PIR ceiling light for bathroom?

Morning all - the ceiling light in my girlfriend's flat is one of those that switches on and off as you move around - it doesn't have a manual switch. It's started flickering on and off, and is very annoying. I opened it and tried adjusting the on/off time with the little pot inside, but it...

    First time with a router

Just a wild idea - which I don't really fancy, but would save me a lot of hassle... the main reason I want a new bed is to have it about 6" higher than the existing one. I tried using furniture riser things, but they're hideous, and not quite high enough anyway. Somebody suggested extending the...

    First time with a router

Yes I'm getting PAR, but the edges are still quite sharp - as it's a bed, I wondered if I might round them slightly...

    First time with a router

Thanks guys - I've already arranged to send it back, as the seller has realised his mistake. With my new plan involving brackets etc, I won't be needing it now anyway. Ummm... if I wanted to smooth the edges of the side pieces of the bed, what would be the easiest way? I don't want to spend a...

    First time with a router

Well, got the thing today... stupid question I reckon, but how do I measure whether it's ¼ or ½? Is it just the hole in the chuck? If it's been misdescribed, it's going back...

    First time with a router

I'm (even more) confused now... if by "rails" you mean the sides of the bed, I'm planning to connect them to the legs using the brackets mentioned earlier - the glue would only be used to assemble the top and bottom sections of the bed, which I don't think should feel too much of the stress...

    First time with a router

Oh, I've no doubt you're right - mortice and tenons etc would seem to be the professional way to do it, but beyond me. I'm thinking the cross members of the ends don't take a lot of strain - my weight will be on the slats, thus the sides, and so ultimately downwards on the legs... hopefully!

    First time with a router

Well, the guy in the video used long screws and glue...? I thought I might put some dowels in too - as always, I don't really know what I'm doing though

    First time with a router

Thanks yes I just meant glue for building the ends ;)

    First time with a router

Yes that's what I normally do - just thought there might be a clever way ;) Any particular kind of wood glue I should use? SF No Nonsense/Gorilla/Evo Stick? Or even No More Nails?

    First time with a router

So... whichever method I choose for actually building the bed, what's the best way to cut the planks to give a precision flat end? I have a hand-held circular saw and a sharp jack saw... Oh, and is it possible to use the router in unskilled hands to smooth edges along the length of the planks etc?

    First time with a router

Sorry mate, should have said, this is a replacement bed, so I already have a (standard double) mattress...

    First time with a router

OK... after much deliberation, I've decided to take a pile of advice from all the suggestions above, as it's clear my ideas of how to do this were somewhat half-baked. Just out of interest, I decided to do the obvious thing, and look for "make a pine bed" on YT... came up with this excellent...

    First time with a router

Sorry, what are dominos and biscuits? And use the router for what? - Embarrassed of NI :notworthy: {edit} sorry, lazy of me - I've Googled biscuits and dominos. I need to sit down with a nice cup of tea
