isit possible to do a 8m span using timber only

I think you have two options for a clear space. Either posijoists as @Dereekoo said, or you put a steel across to half the span.

    Mitre saw issue

Hi I've got an Evo mitre saw. I had a kickback and since then the blade isn't clamping properly. I can't get the back blade clamping washer off the arbour so I think there might be a burr on it that's stopping the washers and blade from moving freely and hence not clamping properly. Does this...

Can I get away with using pea gravel in my mix for footing (small project)?

Yep I would too. Normally I'd use a 1:9 mic got footings, you could go 1:8 for safety.

    Lateral Restraints

Then you'll need to remove enough mortar to get the bent bit through to the cavity. Noggins also required between the rafters above the straps.

    Lateral Restraints

The straps need to go through the wall and hold it from the outside. Do you have face brick or render outer skin?

Can you remove a faceplate and see which way the cables run?

Can this concrete floor be rescued...?

Good idea but I suspect a side stand or jack wheels would poke straight through the rubber.

Strain relief for ceiling roses @ back boxes

@Taylortwocities so is the rule that if the junction box or accessory is fixed, then strain relief not required? That makes sense.

Strain relief for ceiling roses @ back boxes

Hello All I thought that all junctions required strain relief so tend to use Ashley JBs or chocboxes. Is that right? If so, how are back boxes and ceiling roses ok? I guess for back boxes it might be good practice to clip near entry but that's not always possible for plasterboard boxes. I'm...

    Chasing 15mm radiator pipes

@Exedon thanks, I thought 10mm was ok but not 15mm. New builds lol. Yes I have ally tape and I know it can't be stuck directly to the pipes.

    Chasing 15mm radiator pipes

Hi, any hints & tips on fitting 15mm radiator pipes into thermalite for an extension? I wanted 15mm as the pipes are at the end of a long run so I don't think will balance in 10mm. Walls to be dot & dab over block. Both radiators are to be under windows so my planned route is to go down in the...

    Altering three way lighting circuits

How about these, I had omitted some detail for clarity. As above I don't yet know if the live/loop runs directly between the two ceiling roses of if there is another light in the way. I don't have a continuity tester so I think that will require live testing - disconnecting all the wiring at...

    Altering three way lighting circuits

Yes. Red 1 core and earth to first switch, red & black twin and earth between switches, and either red or black 1 core and earth from final switch back to the switched live terminal in the rose. Example picture showing 1 core black and earth.

    Altering three way lighting circuits

I can do whatever I need to do, I'm asking for advice on the easiest! By loop I mean the perm live radial that goes between each fitting on the circuit. It's often labelled loop on JBs and ceiling roses. I also thought it's interesting that this isn't the usual way of wiring two way lighting...

    Altering three way lighting circuits

Hi, I have two separate lighting sub-circuits on the same lighting circuit (i.e. same MCB in CU). I would like to do the following: 1. Remove switch 3 (sw3a and sw3b are separate switches on the same 1g face plate). 2. Can remove switch 1 if necessary or keep if easier. 3. Add another new switch...

Planning permission, or not, for demolition of an attached garage.

A separate building under 50m3 doesn't need permission for demolition but a building over 50m3 does. Therefore I think this is potentially a grey area in that if the garage is attached does it need permission as part of the main house.
