    It depends what the manufacturers specifications allow, find the data sheet for the door and it will tell what you are permitted to cut off the top & bottom.

    Who knows, pry some plaster/plasterboard off and you'll find out, only way to be sure. Despite what many think, old houses were often constructed out of crappy materials, low skilled workers, dubious building techniques and developers who were only interested in profits.

    If the frame was reinforced it'd be OK, otherwise yes through bolts are probably the way to go, perhaps with white plastic bolt caps on the outside? Assuming there's actually enough space to get bolts through ....
