I used a water-based matt varnish (also on some Wickes internal doors). Went on slightly milky but dried clear. Very happy with the result.

Isn't the load taken on the inner leaf? If so those feet are presumably just packing pieces or spacers to support battens and fascias.

Epoxy putty might work, and be less messy than resin. More putty could even be formed into a counterbalance, if required. I've used the kind that comes in blister pack 'doses'.
