Parking an automatic on a hill.

Bring the car to a halt with the footbrake Engage P, which locks up the transmission Apply the handbrake, if it doesn’t come on automatically. Start the engine Engage D, keeping the footbrake on Handbrake off, and drive away. John

    Exhaust clamps

I can’t say I’ve ever had an exhaust clamp come loose so I guess the washers aren’t needed anyway. John

    Air compressor replacement Air Tank

What you propose will work - in theory anyway - but your small compressor will be working over time to fill a larger receiver. Air tools also use one hell of a CFM under use, so the receiver will quickly empty and you're back to square one. I've used a gas bottle before (not sure about any...

    Mountfield SP454 running issues

Another triumph! Seems to blow a little smoke though - maybe the oil level is a little high? John :)

    Mountfield SP454 running issues

I’ve never removed the brass jet before, or altered the plastic insert! I can’t access your vid just now, so how is the engine running? John

    Mountfield SP454 running issues

Yes it does, and there is a drilling connection from one of the small holes shown in picture 1. Squirt plenty of carb cleaner down there! John

    Mountfield SP454 running issues

Can you see in picture 2, the round plastic tick over screw? Below that is the plastic slow running jet which can be prised out for a clean, after the tickover screw is removed. Plenty of carb cleaner needed here, compressed air helps too! John

    Damp courses of bricks

Avoid any water splash from the ground, including leaking gutters, downcomers or whatever, then check out Permagard products for treatment. I was getting a similar issue and the bricks were starting to spall, but a Permagard brush on cream sorted it completely. Naturally enough, it has no effect...

    Mountfield SP454 running issues

The primer bulb on these shoots a momentary shot of air into the float chamber.......this allows a jet of fuel to shoot out of the jet and into the carb venturi - just to give a temporary fuel enrichment . Just like a choke really! Excess priming causes fuel to leak out. These engines do like a...

    Thoughts on bodywork repair needed?

Through the insurers this will be quite expensive.....could you pay cash? Some body shops are insurers only, happily I have a local firm that likes notes. John

Is revealing a cars service history a security risk.

So long as there are no personal details I can't see a problem with that. I suspect there isn't any service history! You can, of course, get the MOT history from the registration number. John :)

Do you drive a manual or auto?

Yaris hybrid with CVT - brilliant, wouldn't go back to manual if I can help it. I don't think I'd dare let it go out of warranty though - transmission and other mysterious bits and bobs included! Manual Bipper van Honda HRV diesel manual. John :)

    Stihl blower carb primer question

If you think about it, there has to be one way valve somewhere as otherwise you would be just blowing air into the fuel tank and not getting very far. If I recall, there is a white plastic block below the primer bulb and the valve is in there (I think!) John :)

    Metal repair

I still think this is a quite easy joint to weld - given access with the seat on a bench and the paint removed.....the weld build up would make things strong once again. If you don't want to do this, I'd still go for a 5mm nut and bolt, which will tighten much more firmly than a 3mm. John :)

    Metal repair

A nut and bolt will always be the best repair here, but 3mm is too small. Can you up it to 5mm? This could be MIG welded in 5 minutes if you can get the seat out. John

    Stihl blower carb primer question

After storing the machine for a while the primer bulb may empty with fuel draining back to the tank. Pressing the primer fills the carb with fuel to aid starting, excess returns back to the tank, you will be able to see. Once started, the primer remains full, but it’s really just there to aid a...

    Leaky Alloys

On an 18 plate car, stick with the wheels you have and follow Regans advice......look to see what the tyre fitter is doing too - they deal with this every day. All people want to do is to fleece you! Particularly check the valve location for bubbles if the leak is tiny. Be lucky John :)

Nissan X Trail Aventura 2008 oil leak

Does the car have a dipstick? Much more reliable than the level sensor. Re the oil leak, it doesn’t look serious from here but it’s time to remove some of the pipes in the area and give us some other photos. At the top of the engine the usual suspect is the rocker cover but that’s only a...
