    Strange cutout - Westie?

I hae a feeling this may be left over from the days of dc mains, +200v 0v -200v (guessing the actual voltages.). Now it is probably a split phase supply with a different phase on each fuse. They are probs only rated to 30a and the whole thing looks lined with our friend asbestos :)

    Loudest bang of my career...

Once we err 'proved' a phase to phase fault. A rather large flame shot out the hole higher than the van. Good job no one was around!

What do you think this might be?

The 'exposed copper' looks like the red PVC insulation on the live core of the concentric cable. It all looks a mess and could do with sorting out. Also if the cable is a looped feed for best door it should be fed on the live unfused side of the cutout as if the fuse blows and there is no access...

    High Domestic Voltage Worry.

Maybe it was caused by the hv network feeding the t/x being abnormally fed? Networks in parallel etc? These sort of things have caused me and my colleagues a fair amount of head scratching before we Sussed it out.

    Electric Shock

Well put it this way, my mums house has a reasonably modern mem memera 2000 board with RCD protected circuits. I still managed to get a good shock from that before it tripped. Singed my fingertip too! ...hey ho

Some people really have no idea...

I had it once where we had a fault to repair in a close and half of the houses would have to go off to make repairs. Anyway, we went door knocking to tell people they are going off and one lady- as soon as we mentioned sse she just said 'nope I'm British gas, I pay them so my electric will stay...

Is it illegal to do this?

Chances are the bang wouldn't blow the s/s fuse, it would just arc away until the live burns away from the neutral. Don't touch it.

Is it illegal to do this?

You know those fireworks you get that go up into the air and go off with a bright flash and a very loud bang? Well imagine that in the house and that's what you are risking happening.

    meter box

Is that all? I did a job and a bit of 4mm was going into an illuminated sign column, with two loops coming off, one feeding a kiosk. fed from the kiosk was 15ish streetlights (the tall ones) going off down the road quite far and off down the other way too. And a set of traffic lights too!

    Picture of the week!™

The earth connection is directly onto the armours of the cable not on the lead sheath. Pretty rubbish IMHO.

    Dimmer Switch Failing

I have a 3x50w GU10 halogen light fitting in the lounge which has a dimmer switch fitted to switch it. Now for the second time the dimmer switch has failed- has no effect, lights won't turn off and the knob goes all loose. I.e it is kacked up inside! What is causing this? the light fitting...

    My callout of the day

Got called here today, the meter was smoking apparently. Turns out that it they'd had the place re-wired/consumer unit change a few months ago. What was smoking was an ancient ELCB between the meter and the CU. I have serious doubts about the spark who did work here, The main earth is only about...

    Leaking sealant around cutout

It won't actually be PME as the cable will be a two core paper insulated lead type which is what we call SNE (seperate neutral earth) and the system is designed in such a way that the lead provides the earth and is earthed at the substation and the neutral conductor is just that, neutral. On...
