    New newels/spindles/rails

Did see those, they look a bit of a faff tho ! (Although don’t doubt they’re good when in)

    New newels/spindles/rails

How are we doing the handrail to newel connection though? Can’t dowel it if we do it in the order discussed. Guess I’ll angle screw and glue it….

    New newels/spindles/rails

I need to fit a single run of handrails and spindles, horizontally on a landing. It’d be a full newel at one end, bolted to the floor joists, and a half newel at the other end fixed to the wall. I’ve done a bit of this in the past but can’t really remember. Am I best fixing both newels and the...

    Weighing in copper

For anyone interested, ended up getting £280 for this lot which was way more than I thought so was happy with it. £54 of Lead, £85 of copper with brass bits, £140 of copper with only solder on it. This place referred to the stuff with brass/chrome still attached as braziery, and the stuff with...

    Paddle Mixer Bricklaying Mortar

Probably not enough water. The quoted amount of water you used is a bit meaningless as it totally depends on how wet the sand from the bag is. When you say padel mixer do you mean on the end of a drill? If it’s got a bit of a gritty feel and it’s definitely building sand, my moneys on a little...

    Soakaway

The 5m from boundary thing (as long as it’s not a building at the boundary) I think is a bit flexible subject to common sense? it’s pretty hard to meet both that and the 5m from house rule for the majority of average size front gardens…

    Unstable wall?

Yes More than enough from what you’ve said. It’s just a partition wall, so as long as it’s stable enough not to move and show visible cracks you’re good

    Unstable wall?

These kind of partition walls rely on lateral support/being fixed at the top to ceiling joists as you’ve found, or they start swaying etc. Shoring up the end with a vertical stud or two would work, and I’d probably look at a couple or three bent restraint straps run from the stud horizontally...

    What foam gun?

    Rebuild brick wall

If the entire wall is now at an angle, then surely that means the foundations have moved due to the hedge, and pointless rebuilding off them. Aside from that, I’m not a bricky, but I’ll start the banter off at £1.5-2k if foundation kept.

How to install PIR Upstand for UFH and Screed

It’s not an issue, as the screed isn’t the finished floor. The little bit of visible perimeter insulation gets covered by a combo of skirting and whatever flooring goes on the screed.

Weep vents positioning above a steel lintel

Did the opening get widened? Looks like the blocks have been cut (although may just be the photo) and guess they just left the old lintel in situ and cracked on fitting a new window? Can’t see an easy fix other than propping, removal of some of the blocks, fitting new cavity lintel with tray etc…

Weep vents positioning above a steel lintel

The weep vent height may be ok if there’s a cavity tray at that height, but wrong if they’re relying on the (cavity) lintel as a tray. Exploratory hole might be a good bet, might be able to get a camera in etc.

    Rafters and external Leaf

I mendip’d mine, mine was also fairly shallow but was at least 17 for the velux’s. dead easy tiles to lay unlike the Anglias on the upper roof which were horrible.

    What foam gun?

I’d say any gun has the ability to either self destruct or get clogged, so I’d just buy the usual basic screwfix ones. Think my current screwfix/toolstation one’s been going a couple of years and the one from eurocell (I think) before that at the same price was similar. I also never bother...

    Rafters and external Leaf

Surely your top roof has a gutter overhang so this one can have a couple of inch verge overhang? Pitch looks shallow but may just be camera angle You don’t want a ladder, last rafter stays on inside against inner skin, the battens over sail both skins and trap some undercloak or have dry verge …

    Joists for extension

This kinda thing where it’s built in/cut into the brickwork. I guess for yours, if you’re matching an existing first floor level for knock through, it may well not land on a bed course so you’d have to cut it into the brick… I’ve never used them though so not sure what the options are.
