Bidirectional EV charging points in the home?

I know you can now use your car as a large battery, and charge it at night and use the power in the house during the day. But does one need a G98 or G99 to do this? Reason I ask it is the same as plug and play solar, except the plug is designed for two-way. In the same way as a car is not...

    Isolating Switch

An extractor fan in a workshop comes under different rules to in a bathroom. We are looking at risk assessments, and why you need a fan etc. So when I worked in one factory the extractor fan was wired through a current monitor, and the machines could not run unless the extractor was drawing...

Replacing Drayton LP522 with Hive - straight swap?

You want heating? I am trying to find better way to cool my house. Interests me nevertheless, I know my Drayton Wiser does not need a wall thermostat, it can use the TRV head to control if the boiler runs, but did not realise the older system could use the TRV heads to control boiler. What am...

Cooling with portable AC, 26.6°C too hot for living room.

I have a portable AC which will stop room getting too hot, but once hot, not very good at cooling it again. So at midday (1 pm BST) my living room at 26.6°C so turned the AC on. But really too late, all windows closed, one internal door has a gnome stopping the door fully closing to allow cats...

Plug in balcony solar UK , just a Lidl question

This website claims to explain the Lidi plug in solar There are some errors, the main one is they seem to have mixed up unidirectional and bidirectional RCD/RCBOs with type AC and type A, OK in the main we should not today use type AC, but my solar inverter instructions tell me with that...

Plug in balcony solar UK , just a Lidl question

Sorry, just twigged as to reason why someone would say this. If we were to get a battery pack something like this. Then you could set up a radial or ring final supplied from a unit like this to power items direct from the battery pack. And either charge the battery from solar or mains, so that...

Plug in balcony solar UK , just a Lidl question

My house back-ground use around 200 watts, above that it will cause export at most times of the day. As we go from 200 to 800 watts, the amount exported will increase to the point where half of what is produced will be exported. This time of year, we will produce between 6 am and 9 pm, but it...

Non-bidirectional RCD/RCBO feeding sockets, should they get a code C2 with EICR?

Totally agree, a consumer unit made of a conducting material has more dangers specially with a TT supply than any chance any non-conducting material going on fire.

Plug in balcony solar UK , just a Lidl question

Oh, what a tangled web you weave. We have been talking about plug-in solar since March, after Ed Miliband announced they were to be permitted. There are two main points, one is the regulations, as it stands BS 1363 does not permit any generator to be plugged in. There are other regulations like...

How do I go about this?

We can use the Wheatstone bridge idea, where we compare rather than measure, and the op-amp does just this. It is a long time since I was in University and to remember how it all worked now not sure if I can remember. I know the early RCDs did not use electronics to work as there was a worry...

How do I go about this?

OK pedantic rules KO, yes the ELCB-v measured the voltage and hence current flowing between the bonding in the building and the true earth, so be it voltage or current, it is measuring earth leakage not live differential current. We traditionally called a high impedance or resistance measuring...

Non-bidirectional RCD/RCBO feeding sockets, should they get a code C2 with EICR?

The NHS did ban the socket protectors in their properties. But I note still used in my doctors' surgery. We are going back around 4 years when they were banned, so no idea as to reason. Very likely as not complying with BS 1363, so regulations will not allow them to be put into a socket unless...

Looped supply - power went off when DNO changed the meter next door.

My son had something similar, old council house, been sold off for years, and he wanted to swap which room was a kitchen, and rewire the house, and it would suit to get wires off outside of house, so got and excepted a quote to move supply, which would end up making the DNO cable shorter and...

Looped supply - power went off when DNO changed the meter next door.

Thank you for your reply, it was not what I expected, I would hope @flameport would find this thread and comment. I know my own inverter has a load of little switches that set it to each country's requirements, and even G98 and G99 in this country are different. I was under the impression...

Verify Main bonding? Test method for Tags?

The loop impedance tester is used to test earth/bonding, and they are expensive. I bought one, and not convinced it is doing what it says on the tin. The RCD tester works OK, but the loop impedance seems to give some odd results. So buying cheap is not the way to go.

Google Nest Mini fault with radio 4 and radio 4 extra repeating sentence?

It seems Alexa you need to link it to the BBC sounds app, I will guess the BBC is trying to limit listening to UK only and having to use the app, stops it working outside the UK. I think it is time to say good by to the BBC, seems they are using sneaky tricks, like buying into UKTV, so people...

Has plug and play solar now been passed, I see adverts?

It seems only a week to go, UK Plug In Solar tells us on 2nd May 2026 that so by the 30th we will know if the government can keep a promise.

Non-bidirectional RCD/RCBO feeding sockets, should they get a code C2 with EICR?

I watched a Jonathan Tracey YouTube called Is Plug-In Solar LEGAL in the UK? He links to Is Plug-In Solar Legal in the UK? The Complete 2026 Guide which says "Quick answer Yes, plug-in solar is legal in the UK since 24 March 2026." But then continues "The BSI product standard that certifies...

Radiator replacement - should we go for higher BTU than needed?

Love to know how they work that out? I selected one, and it asks a load of questions, but one question was missed, how long do you want it to take to heat up the room? I moved house, from one which took around ½ hour to heat living room, to one taking nearly 2 hours, both homes could maintain...

Looped supply - power went off when DNO changed the meter next door.

No, but as to the rest, not sure, maybe the supply was being unlooped? But your inverter should have shut down if not supply, if there was no supply, how long does it take a smart meter to re-boot, I don't know.
