    Shed Power

2.5 T&E is not rated at 32 amps. So that overload needs changing, but my shed is on a 16 amp RCBO type A double pole switching, and the only time it gets any real load is when my son comes and plugs his EV into the outside socket. So 16 amp for me is ample. It was considered we would have a...

    RTS turn off

I did look a few times in the past at off-peak, and until I had batteries installed, as you point out, it often costs more than a single-rate tariff. Even with storage heaters, it would seem prudent to move to single-rate tariff in the summer months. Not sure on the rules with Octopus, but...

    Paint drying time?

Where I volunteer we have a load of benches for use by the general public, we would pull in the bad ones each winter and repaint, and we had experimented with plastic instead of wood, so no need to repaint, just one done to date, and it is working well, but to use plastic we have to put angle...

Has plug and play solar now been passed, I see adverts?

I have only controlled a small power station, four x 250 kW RR eagle powered generators, and the main problem was one generator failing, and the other two not taking the load while I put on the spare. Worked on larger power stations 2 x 750 MW and 4 x 650 MW, and it did surprise me how long it...

    Out door light recommendations help/advise

I have smart sockets bulbs etc, for my outside lights, so my wife can turn on the light with her phone before reversing down the drive, but she had a problem with lights too bright and reflections on her reversing camera, so needed to use a smart bulb to turn down the light level so it did not...

    Bidirectional and data sheets.

I looked at a data sheet dated 11-12-2025 and no info as to if bidirectional. How can one actually find out if existing units are bidirectional or not?

What Do You Make Of This?

Supply should have an overload, and all a cooker which can use more that the overload will do, is to trip an overload. My cooker is on a 32 amp 30 mA RCBO but can use nearly 60 amps with everything switched on. Nothing wrong with that. I can see that the likes of Curry's like any other retailer...

    SWA across concrete footpath

Could leave it on top, what I did was lay paving bricks with some sand under them, mainly to stop pools of water, but also hides the cable. Today I have an angle grinder so could cut a channel and fill it with sand, but my SDS does not have a rota stop, so not ideal.

Has plug and play solar now been passed, I see adverts?

Oh dear, just watched this not sure if I agree with it all, but I have said how I charge my batteries with off-peak, so I can export during the day can't help with the situation, so how long before tariffs change.

    RTS turn off

30 June 2025 was the cut-off date. Government press release said date delayed It would start 30 June 2025 but on 30 May 2025, there were 314,935 RTS meters requiring replacement in Great Britain, according to supplier data collected by Ofgem. At the rate of 1000 meters a day, looking at May...

    RTS turn off

Yes I have an export meter which has never been used. The system was simple, the supplier can't force anyone to have a smart meter, but if you refuse, they can also refuse to allow dual tariffs or export payment. So to refuse is to cut off your nose to spite your face.

    RTS turn off

I think the rules do say they can't force anyone to have a smart meter, but if one refuses they don't have to provide with another sort of dual tariff meter, however if a smart meter will not work, then they have to produce some other form of meter, we have no idea what that would be. The smart...

    RTS turn off

Thank you, @fixitflav I never had RTS, only got a smart meter after solar was fitted. I looked at the rates, and with solar there is never a time when peak/off-peak is not an advantage. But with storage heaters, not so cut and dried. Winter yes, but summer not so sure. Would love to know what...

Yes, my wife has just been to Ireland and back this weekend, and she does not have a passport.

Spot light in kitchen need replacing for fire rated

I consider fire spread has nothing to do with an EICR. As to electrics starting a fire, yes, but as to spread of fire, it is hard to say missing metallic cable retention or holes in walls or ceilings needing fire stop etc, is required. I at first considered an escape route to be stairs, hall...

So a new Welsh government, what will it mean?

Remembering we are talking about Wales, and the Irish do not need a passport to come to Wales, or the Welsh a passport to go to Ireland, and the boats that go between the two are not what I would call small. The only people coming into Wales in a small boat would be on the canal system. Both the...

So a new Welsh government, what will it mean?

Well a canal boat is a small boat, oddly living with no fixed abode with a narrow boats is not seen as doing the same with a caravan. But people who live on a boat I suppose will be called boat people, people using a boat to get from A to B are passenger or crew.

So a new Welsh government, what will it mean?

I know my son was for a time a boat person, and yes living on a narrow boat means no fixed abode, and does cause problems, even renewing ones driving licence they want a fixed address. So yes, the Shropshire union canal does run out of Wales, so the person could be in England one day and Wales...
