    Are my TRVs cr*p?

We have an "Affordable Warmth" scheme here in NI whereby councils will pay to improve the heating/insulation in your house if you're on a low income. So when I bought the house 6 years ago, they paid a contractor to put 12" insulation in the attic, replace some blown double glazing panels etc...

    Suggestions for new fence?

Thanks for all the helpful comments and suggestions  Having examined the different sections a bit more closely now, the timbers attaching at least a couple of them to the brickwork have rotted, so I think those entire sections would have to be replaced anyway... probably end up...

    Draught from double glazing

So... that doesn't mean there's a problem with the external seal...?

    Tree vs foundations

...and there's why it's hard for an ordinary punter like me to know what to do

    Tree vs foundations

Anybody know how high this kind of tree will grow in the end? Seems to be some kind of spruce, and various websites say up to 40M    And whether, if I have it regularly trimmed now, it could be kept at its current height? Thanks all

    So... what about the roots?

    Draught from double glazing

I've just noticed a tiny draught when I put the back of my hand down to the corner of the sill and, as you can see, a small amount of dust blows through. when there's a strong wind. It doesn't really annoy me - can't feel it in the room - but I've had problems with other windows fitted by this...

    Tree vs foundations

I thought this tree would stop gaining height years ago but, as you can see, it hasn't, and I'm now worried about it damaging the foundations... Not sure what kind it is, as it was here when I bought the house - Christmas type maybe? I do know that hard pruning this kind destroys them. Do you...

    Adding Fernox

So... I turned the pump down to (1), and am surprised to report that it seems to have made very little difference to the speed the rads heat up, so you may have been right about that one  I'll report back in a week or so if the rad has stopped filling up with air. It's odd how it...

    Adding Fernox

Well I tried. Hypodermic it is then. This is what we have to put up with in NI

    Adding Fernox

Thanks again Harry - trouble is, I'm no longer capable of getting into the attic. I did turn the pump down from position 3 to 2 a year or two ago, just to see if it would make a difference... it didn't. Maybe I should turn it down to 1 just to see if that makes a difference. This is a bungalow...

    Adding Fernox

Any attempt by me to do something like that usually results in a biblical flood :( It's an oil boiler, and not combi. I think open vented means the old fashioned (installed 1994) kind with a hot water tank... is that what you need to know?

    Adding Fernox

Will do, thanks. Think the water is pretty clear actually! {edit} hmmm looks like I'd need 2 of those, as I have more than 9 rad panels in the house...

    Adding Fernox

Thanks Harry, you're a lifesaver as usual. Just out of curiosity... I understand that each rad in the house is fed by a separate pipe under the floor from a big junction box somewhere? As none of the other rads ever need bled, is it reasonable to assume that there will be a leak in that pipe...

    Adding Fernox

Please bear with me when you read this – for the avoidance of doubt, (a) I don't know what I’m talking about, and (b) I know I should get a proper plumber to do it. Trouble is, the one we used for years let us down very badly, skimping on things, bodging etc – took us a long time to realise what...

    Loose screws in composite door

That's one of those why-didn't-I-think-of-it ideas :notworthy: Thanks chaps, much appreciated!

    Loose screws in composite door

At least I think that's what you call them... maybe MDF or something? Not wood anyway... so the doors are quite old now (maybe 30 years), and the screws holding the furniture on are very loose, so you can nearly pull the handle off the door sometimes. I've read one or two other threads here...

    Suggestions for new fence?

Thanks for that - I *think* the wood has actually been painted, but I'll have a proper look tomorrow... when you say "capping piece", do you mean this sort of thing?

    Suggestions for new fence?

I'll have to go out and have a better look when it's light again, but I think mostly the tops of some of the planks have fallen away - but last time I looked, I think the wood felt soft and crumbly in places. If you're thinking is it repairable, hhmmm, maybe I should inspect it better... but...
