Pouring a thick concrete slab into a hole full of water

I came across the Tremie method whilst looking on the web for a solution, but I had not come across the Bentonite one. Both seem a bit complex to achieve for a comparatively small hole, especially seeing as I am mixing and pouring the stuff myself. I think I am going to have to go with the...

Building a party wall in the loft - advice needed

...Jude, for extra detail regarding costs. For Main Loft Area I mixed mortar (5bags of builders sand with 1 bag of cement) in garden in cement mixer and carried into loft in buckets. I cannot remember how many bags I needed, but It felt a lot. As main house was 8meters deep and 2m high in loft...

    Concrete mix query

Gotcha. It will provide you with a weaker than standard 6:1 mix but not by much. Why the scientific measuring for the strength of concrete? Are you building a dam? Concrete is not cement by the way.

Sub-standard service from DIY & Hire Shops

I've not used Jewsons for hiring but they seem to be a bit more expensive. Might give them a try though from this thread the wise advice seems to be to to concentrate on the smaller companies if at all possible.

Sub-standard service from DIY & Hire Shops

...must vary from branch to branch but my local Jewsons has been more than helpful to me. The guy in the depot bent over backwards to get a cement mixer to my home address with little notice (or rather none!), alright that was down to my bad planning at the time, but they resolved my issues when...

    Paddle Mixer

I have an SDS drill but don't like it being covered with cement and such like and falling over all over the place once that paddle is on it... If I could buy a dedicated mixer at a reasonable price, I would much prefer that.

    Question About Electric Paddle Mixer

...will. I use mine with a 45l Flexi tub to mix bricklaying mortar, which is obviously a bit wetter at the end but starts off dry. I have a cement mixer but I'm to slow to use large batches. A few tips: buy a decent one and keep the receipt (I went through 2 Aldi mixers very quickly and despite...

    Question About Electric Paddle Mixer

After much arduous mixing by hand of sharp sand and cement in a bucket for re-pointing a large slabbed double driveway, and with quite a lot of further re-pointing still to do on paths/patio, I am considering purchasing one of these electric paddle mixers :-...

    Amateur DIY Extension

...as I'm sure you all know - seemed to either be heatwave or thunderstorms, with very little inbetween, and I also found dealing with the cement mixer to be a real faff. Though I did eventually learn that I can dig a hole to get rid of the water and such for cleaning the mixer! Tips for other...

Maximum screed depth / ideas for building up ground floor height

I used to be a tiler so that's what I've got against suspended timber floors. Long span (5.1m clear) means joists would need to be pretty bulky, they are really expensive (at least comparable in cost to the other options) and we need to tile it for a wheelchair user so would just prefer it to be...

    Mortar mix properties

Hi, I've been hearing building noises from two doors up, so I knocked and asked if they have a mixer? Yes, it's now mixing my cement:) Now I can mix it properly, and it's perfect, although it was hot yesterday, so it was going off quickly. Both of the concrete tops were pushed off...

    Mortar mix properties

Hi All, I was on the wrong side of town for B&Q, so I went into Homebase. 1x bag of cement with a hole, and no sand. Next Travis Perkins, I asked the how much. One chap said 5 and 1 another said 10 and 2. I bought 10 and 2. I think they'll take any I don't use back, or I'll keep it for a...

    Mortar mix properties

Yep, I don’t know what the minimum amount is you can mix, but I’ve had it where the mix just sticks to the side and doesn’t do anything, so I tend to use a minimum of half bag cement plus 10 sand or whatever for the mixer. Yeah, it deffo works, but the mixer probably needs to be half decent...

    Mortar mix properties

Hi 2, I'll mix by hand, and I've no idea how long it will take, although I've done it before. That one was rendered, so it hid all my mistakes. As this is not rendered, so I'll take my time. When you say a 'Belle full' how many B&Q bags of each? cheers, C.

    Mortar mix properties

No, it’s a paddle mixer for mixing plaster and adhesives. It’s not the correct tool for the job but I’ve got one and I like the easy life. Very very roughly I think I tend to allow one bucket trowel full of sand, per standard size brick, with the corresponding amount of cement. As I say tho...

    Distance of openings from wall

Thats what I thought. Im amazed that up in Yorkshire they do strip foundations. Ive literally never seen a builder do one down here. Mind you, I bet once builders try getting a concrete pump for a job they dont go back to barrows. The only frustrating thing is always having to do foundations...
