There must be some mechanism by which the code is generated and connected to a meter, so it may be possible to work out what it's meant to be. Failing that, one can simply record and retransmit the whole transmission. Classic replay attack.

They're very easy to use and even come with a little instruction book. Failing that, there's will be plenty of guides on the interweb. All you need to do is check the voltage across the input terminals, then across the output terminals to see if you have 240ish and 20ish volts, respectively...

Why can't one have remote control and fault monitoring on a low pressure Sodium lamp? Presumably the old lamps don't support that but then the solution is to swap the old system for one that does. That doesn't necessarily require changing the actual physics of the lamp.
