Does Anyone Ever Get Any Work From People Posting On Diynot?

I'm a new boy compared with you seasoned diynotters. Never got any work for it, and don't really expect it. For me it's another link back to my website to push me up the ladder - and it has. In addition a great site for venting your thoughts, views and picking up tips, as well as helping...

    Game of Ping Pong?

Here we go again 'happy as can be' Pillar to post! Installed electric shower for customer. Found to be faulty. Customer doesn't want Triton to come out to repair - wants a replacement new one. Fine. Get back to supplier (on-line). Can't return it as it's been fitted, manufacturers problem...

    "trainees" soldering

Give them 10 years and they will be telling you what to do. I get told to move out the way now.

    Central heating piping

Copper if you can afford it, otherwise copper away from boiler and up to each rad. Underfloor runs can be done in hep barrier pipe, and any surface mounted pipes I would keep in copper also. Tip: Pressure test install before you fill it with water.

    Bath waste pipe layout

Sorry don't know your setup, but down here you sometimes get them on ground floor bathrooms that are secondary to a main stack. They are fitted with an air admittance valve to stop gas smells entering the building and when the installation of an external stack is not practical.

    Bath waste pipe layout

Good idea to have separate pipes for basin and shower/bath to soil stack. If you have a lack of fall from the shower/bath then you will need to raise it, or if you are able, drop the waste pipe down below floor level. The cause of the discharge from the basin backing up the shower waste is...

    Gas Safety Certificate

Agree with Jackpike. Also on a 30 year old boiler I would have said it would not have passed the reg's on it's original installation.

TRV's - No Thermostat, do I need one?

Get a room stat installed. The previous owner didn't know what he was talking about and probably spent a lot of unnecessary money on his gas bill because of it. :)

    Advice needed on overdue payment

Looks like if you send him a reminder he'll just ignore it. Face to face you will probably get a better response, as he will know then that you know is new address. Otherwise take it as a learning experience when dealing with tenanted premises. It happens once in a blue moon to us all.

new install but cold water feed is a mix of two metals

Had a call a couple of weeks ago on bad flowrate on hot water side from a newly installed boiler. It had been connected to old iron pipe. Turned out old pipe full of rust etc. Replaced pipe and full flowrate returned. :)

Self employed, Pro/cons of reg as Ltd company

Don't forget to take out 'Public Liability Insurance' though! When I started I did work out of an old car, and I advertised in local newsagent, and did leaflet drops. Cheap as chips but it worked, and gave me the break I needed. P.S. Still use back bedroom as my office, and I now employ a...

    Getting work experience

It ain't going to be easy, and will require persistance, and some bit of lateral thinking. Contacting small heating & plumbing firms may help. What about contacting others you went to college with, or did your acs with? Were any of them self employed? What about your mates in other trades...

Self employed, Pro/cons of reg as Ltd company

Going self employed, start off Sole Trader, and keep your overheads low as you can. Be a scrooge. You may find SE is not for you, and you go back to being employed. Doing your own accounts is simple at first, and for all the start up costs you may make, can be claimed against in your tax return...

I would have thought the installer would have checked that. Probable quicker to remove and fit a new valve, and have done with it.

    what size nuts are there?

Apart from a 6" wrench and a 8" wide jaw, I also have an 8" reversable grip jaw (that's what I call it anyway!), which comes in useful sometimes, and saves getting the stillsons out. :)

    Terms & Conditions

T&C should read 'We take full responsibility for any mess or damaged caused during installation' Under those T&C it will make you take the appropriate precautions to minimise mess and damage. What would you do if it was in your house???

New washing machine drain gurgles in the sink

Washing machines or dishwashers discharging into a spigot attached to a sink trap will cause a gurgling noise. I cannot see if you fit a anti-syphon trap it will overcome your noise problem. Either live with it or you will have to provide a separate stand pipe for the appliance. Even then you...

Smell in cupboard - advice needed.

:?: Forget the boiler for the moment. Check your washing machine/dishwasher outlet pipes if they are in the same vacinity. Do they discharge into a trapped outlet?
