In the absence of a photo momentarily, there are two square frames, separately covered with shiplap board. The frames are screwed together, leaving a slight gap between each. I intend to paint it with Ducksback, but want to fill the gap first.

Thanks. I linked the thermostat wires as you described and the central heating now works via the programmer. Therefore, it appears to be a faulty thermostat. I'll order one and let you know how I get on with that. Thanks again for all your help.
