    Lead water pipe replacement

Very useful. Thanks. I'll get some quotes to replace from the meter. At a minimum I'll replace what's visible in the picture as I can then move the kitchen stop-cock at the same time.

    Lead water pipe replacement

I've taken up my floor to provide access to trades for electrical work and gas pipe work. 1934 house has capped off gas pipes in the bedroom walls - more reliable to disconnect at the meter I'm told. Getting the floor up has been a trauma as detailed in Removing laminate glued to ply glued to...

Joist sizes in a 1930s build

The joist span is 1.6 metres. It's in the entrance hallway with a solid brick wall either side. The joist centres vary from 13½" to 14½".

Cut the tongue/groove off flooring the starting??

Hi Quick question. Laying some P5 chipboard in my hall to replace damaged floorboards. The chipboard has tongue/groove all around. Should I trim off the tongue/groove for the starting board to give a butt joint against the masonry or just leave it? Cheers

Joist sizes in a 1930s build

Mine aren't even 4x2, that would be 3¾" deep. Another question: I've not encountered previously the type of nails used to secure the floorboards. Anyone know what they're called? Should I be concerned about the splits along the top of the joists as I'm pulling up the boards and nails? Cheers

Joist sizes in a 1930s build

Hi All, I'm back with more amateur questions :p Just some history, the previous occupants glued ply onto the floorboards and then glued vinyl tiles to the ply (Removing laminate glued to ply glued to floorboards - nightmare). This has made getting access difficult and the trades have...

Removing laminate glued to ply glued to floorboards - nightmare

The gas pipe in the void is in steel and needs to be replaced in copper plus it's slightly undersized for the boiler so access from the meter under the stairs and into the kitchen is required. I also need some additional sockets installed so the electrician will need access at sever points...

Removing laminate glued to ply glued to floorboards - nightmare

Hi all, I need to get the floor up on the ground floor of a 1930s semi-detached in order to provide access for the electrician and plumber. Unfortunately one of the previous owners has glued what looks like 9mm ply (and stapled it!) and then glued laminate on top. Proving an absolute...

    Best temporary floor option

Hi All, We recently moved into a 1934 semi-detached. The previous owner has either done some works themselves or had an incompetent tradesman in. We will need some work done which will require access to the sub-floor space for electrical, plumbing and insulation. The floor needs to come up but...

Piers for shed on sloping ground

Interesting video. Unfortunately I don't have access to the equipment required for cutting and drill the sections of steel that the timbers are supported by.

Piers for shed on sloping ground

Another option I'm considering is shuttering around the edge and laying a dry mix of sand and cement with paving slabs on top. That way I don't have to rush to get it level before it goes off. The sides could be supported with concrete edge stones to stop the edge spreading when weight is...

Piers for shed on sloping ground

Hi @Tigercubrider Thanks for the reply. The reason I've suggested what I have is due to the presence of the 4 brick piers shown in the picture. Additionally, I'd have to mix any concrete by hand so I'm trying minimise that as I imagine that pouring in batches would just lead to lots of cracking.

Piers for shed on sloping ground

Hi All, I would like to install a shed in my garden. I have quite a few bikes plus tools plus garden equipment so I'm considering a reasonably large shed of 12ft x 6ft (3.7M x 1.8M). The issue I have is that the location where I would like to place the shed is sloping away from the house...

    Being nosy about costs?

This has been my thinking for most of my life but it doesn't appear to have paid off. While I've been avoiding debt, others have bought massive houses with large, cheap repayment mortgages. Suckers like myself who took out small, manageable loans, have only managed to migrate up the ladder due...

Hand mix concrete instead of postcrete

Cheers for this. Never occurred to me (y) Given the hot weather in the UK currently, should I pour some water into the hole first?

Hand mix concrete instead of postcrete

Hi I'm putting in some concrete fence posts. Some of the holes remaining from removing the existing posts are quite large but unfortunately need to be reused. IMG_3029 by curium posted 22 Jun 2021 at 12:40 AM I'm not sure bags of postcrete will be adequate so I'm considering hand mixing some...

    Garden Retaining wall

I need to replace a retaining wall. Retaining wall by curium posted 17 Jul 2021 at 6:32 AM The garden slopes away from the house. The current wall is 7m long and 2 courses high. It is bowing in places and generally looks unsightly. Considering my options before getting a tradesman to quote...

Will a breaker from hire shop help with this?

Hi All I thought I'd update to say that the breaker was money well spent and that I've removed the old concrete post. IMG_3029 by curium posted 22 Jun 2021 at 12:40 AM I'm considering using shuttering to isolate the replacement post from the wall. Once the concrete has gone off, remove the...
