MOT Emissions fail - thoughts, please?

I suspect that's the problem - if there's even a brick inside the can! The cheapo aftermarket cat manufacturers know that the MOT test can't even check for NOx, so they leave those expensive chemicals out altogether. I also get the impression they really skimp on the oxidation chemicals too...

    Petrol can

The importer (our gaffer) learned a hard lesson on that one. China can do truly excellent stuff... ...if you pay for it. It can also do really **** stuff, if that's your bag, and it can do it very cheap. You're always raving about how cheap the stuff you buy from China is, aren't you...? ;)

MOT Emissions fail - thoughts, please?

Could I ask for thoughts on the attached, please? Not mine, just trying to help someone out on a Facebook group. 1993 (ish) car with a cat. Lambda is perfect, but HC is a bit high, and CO is very high. The poster said the cat "looked quite new". Recent new plugs and leads. Says the exhaust...

    New check for MOT ?

Bicycles don't have indicators! Hell, you're doing well if you find one with a bloody tail light, half the time! :ROFLMAO: Might this have been an old "grey import" from the USA where they make the relevant tail light flash, instead of having indicators?

    Petrol can

Probably truer to say there's nothing wrong with some stuff from China! But speaking as someone who worked for a company that imported a container-load of face masks from China during Covid and sent a few of them to a British lab for testing, I can assure you that it doesn't really matter what...

    Van with seats.

Ford Custom Tourneo? Mercedes Vito? Both a similar size to the VW Shuttle / Traveller, but they're all bigger vehicles than the Serena? The current Ford Connect is actually the current VW Caddy. Get the long wheelbase version of either, for similar space to your Nissan?

    Is it my Alternator

Loose battery cable? Or worse, a battery cable with chafed insulation, shorting against the chassis or engine block? Also maybe a broken engine earth strap, meaning the engine is getting its earth return by some other cable?

    My bloody clutch has gone!

Lots of them. I had a miserable time with my wife's old Nissan X-Trail timing chain, some years ago. Bloody horrible engine! But in general, chains are not as trouble-free as they once were. BMW, Jaguar, Stellantis... All have models with timing chain problems. The problem, (I think), is...

    My bloody clutch has gone!

Mine was the "deluxe" model with the extra wheel! ;) (A Reliant Rebel - predecessor to the Kitten). A much more conventional layout than the three-leggers, so the gearbox had to come out from underneath.

    My bloody clutch has gone!

These days, more people are cursing chains and pining for the good old days when a £25 belt would do the job!

    My bloody clutch has gone!

I can respect that. It's a tough way to earn a living! Many years ago, I was due to go walking in the Lakes with a couple of school friends on the Saturday, but to my horror, the clutch in my Reliant started slipping on the way home on the Friday night. I spent much of that night on my back...

    My bloody clutch has gone!

No, he'd have bought a replacement Chinese knock-off one and then started another thread telling us how we'd all invalidate our insurance if we didn't fit genuine parts... ;)

    26th Jan law changes?

+1 for clickbait. UK laws aren't generally written in that way. They'll specify what needs to happen (e.g. clear view of the road at all times), and that's what you'll get prosecuted if caught without that being the case. The law won't care whether you use a scraper, a can of de-icer, hot...

    26th Jan law changes?

I've a vague feeling that the Bristol car company (of all people!) had heated front screens in the late 1950s? However, I've been unable to verify that. The guy who told me, said it was as a result of their work with aircraft.

    Road safety?

Aye, that's fine, if you don't like it, don't use it. Personally, as I get a GPS receiver "free" with my phone, and the app is free, I don't really have a problem with it at all! I've only had to use a recovery service twice in my life, and the first time, apps that report your position...

    Axle repair

If it was mine, I wouldn't. Too much chance of starting a fatigue crack at the bottom of one of those scratches / gouges.
