    Tile Cutters

I have one of these: heavy duty tile saw and this blade is the best I've tried so far with it: diamond cutting disc Cuts through porcelain tiles without a problem-nice clean cuts without chipping. I have a Rubi score and snap cutter as well for straight cuts on larger tiles but can't really...

    Sanity check on plumbing quote

Even if everything straightforward that's not a half day job esp if pipework to rads needs altering. 1 day, plus time to purchase materials...if day rate is £350 to £400 I'd say 1.5 days is more reasonable + materials. Thus I'd go with Notch7s estimate, personally (also not a plumber).

New combi boiler fitted - not flushed, no inhibitor added

You can buy Fernox express test kits which you can do at home, taking a small sample from a radiator/magnetic filter. I've ordered some as we have a similar scenario to you (want to check following system drain and refill and don't trust workmanship). The full kit containing 50 test strips is...

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

Reasonable. As with all these things it is a combination of a few issues and the thermostat ‘misunderstanding’ with this particular company (which is a stone bonker- they’ve charged in quote for new one), has proved to be the tipping point. Which I’m pretty sure is covered by another offence:LOL:

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

Some of it. Some of it they left and I took to the tip. But, I said this wasn’t a problem as I go to the tip quite a lot so no issues there. There was nothing in the quote or t and c’s regarding waste. I didn’t say anything because to be honest I forgot. I get some peoples views that this is...

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

Thanks! Your setup is exactly what we are aiming for, but with the ashp. Weather compensation, and better comfort. The previous owner of our house had panels installed as well so it just seemed to make sense going down this route and at the end of the day it's just another way of heating the...

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

The in Some interesting case studies there..... I concur that it is for the tradesperson to specify in the contract and not turn it around on the customer. A reasonable person wouldn't classify a cylinder worth just under £100 as waste. If they are happy for the plumber to realise the...

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

Couldn't resist checking in. Interesting perspectives but yes bottom line is I consider it theft. They are benefiting from taking my property and I don't really get why it's an accepted perk, or bonus. My point about the invoice wasn't to suggest I'd ever not pay. I've always paid, and in some...

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

Nothing in the quote/contract covers this. Customer to ask or professional tradesperson to specify that they are going to remove valuable parts for their benefit? I just assumed I’d get to keep a pump that cost almost £200. Or- at least be asked, rather than me having to request it specified in...

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

I don't mind about copper pipe. What I do mind is components that are worth quite a bit of money and assumed ownership rights seem to come into play. As above, I didn't consider these items waste and I wasn't asked, and certainly the cylinder I could have made a fair bit off Ebay.

Useful insights. Industry standard practice, is what I am gathering. Thanks

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

It's a £14k job, and yes I expect to be asked as it is my property. Perhaps I should round down the invoice by £50 and see if they mind. Thermostat + hub- not in box. Looks dirty/used. It is just obvious when something isn't new. No instruction manual. A really old version no longer available...

Plumbers/heating engineers- is this standard? (Value of scrap) (Ed.)

We currently have heating engineers in for quite a large job. Prior to this we've had a few other reasonably major jobs done including removal of an old vented copper cylinder to unvented (different company). On both occasions some old parts which I would not consider waste, have been removed...

    Yorkshire fittings advice please.

I've used loads of yorkshire fittings when redoing plumbing in our house and never added extra solder- a great invention for sure. The main benefit I find (with the assistance of a decent rothenberger torch as mentioned above) is the ability to solder one handed when joints situated in various...

    Bathroom electrics (for smart toilet)

Hi all, I'm renovating a bathroom at the moment and the wife has requested a smart toilet. This requires an electrical supply to heat a small HW reservoir. Regarding regs, how should this be approached? Does this require a cable running from the main fuse box with it's own RCD, supplying only...

    Wall Panelling or Tiles

Tiles, and epoxy grout which is far more resistant to discolouration as it is impermeable (unlike normal grout, hence why it causes problems). Nice tiles look far better than any panels, in my opinion....

    Sub contracting

Absolutely. Full heat loss calcs, and I've paid a visit to a previous customer to look at their install as well. We wrote off 4 or 5 other companies before going with this one, so it was really disappointing this appeared to be going a bit bendy after we thought we had made the right decision...
