Never put any silicone onto the outside edge of Splashback trim - it can’t be painted. ( you might not want to now, but you will in a few years ). Always use grout to backfill a trim on a wall that’s not flat. I’m always wary of doing this with Black trim though, as black grout ‘isn’t ‘ ...

No, you can't tile chipboard. It's not good practice to tile ply either, though it can be done.
