Can't do that I'm afraid, it's plumbed in the 'proper' way, with rigid copper pipe all the way up. The thread on the top cap is too small and fragile also really.

Thanks again for the help so far. Here are a couple more pics. The first one show the cold tap, taken apart obviously, the second pic is the hot tap, tried again using the various methods as advised, there us just no movement or give at all.

That's right, it is a 'square' bolt type thing which locates at the top, with the part of the tap which you turn for the water. It only slips on for about a quarter of an inch, can't believe how 'fused' the two have become.

I have used a similar method, with a metal bar wrapped in a cloth underneath the bottom of the tap top, and also tried prising it off levering a piece of wood under it. Seems to be well and truly stuck.

I have been doing that with a rubber mallet, all around it and on top, but I am wary of going too hard and cracking the sink. I will continue to do so though if needs be, thank you.

There isn't a screw under the cap. The cap screws off and has the thread underneath it, which is attached. Then the top just pulls off. The hot one is stuck though.

Thanks for your reply. The tap isn't like that, with the cold one you unscrew the top bit (the red part in the pic), then the top just pulls off. But this one is stuck solid.

I am trying to take the top off this tap so I can clean it out and change the washer. But it is stuck solid. All sorted at last. Managed to get a plumber out, great guy, and only charged £10 to fit the valve I had bought. Kept the old olive as suggested. Thanks for the replies and help.
