Thanks. I attempt to clean things regularly and my wife does not do frying, so the fan is not heavily coated with layers of grease. Will look at removing it and see what I can clean. Why are they made so it is a major job to clean? Or maybe the plan is, replace rather then maintainer?

Think that makes sense. So I assume that one of the wires to the switch has come loose were it is not so visible. Perhaps I will investigate somewhat deeper tomorrow and if I cannot solve the mystery, return to Screwfix. Most inconvenient at this time of the year.

What I don't understand, if one of the wires has become loose, and the switch is for on and off, why does it start? Surely it is effectively off?
