Some fence posts rotten, others fine

Hi W, If you scoop the old posts out of their concrete bases, the hole left 'cups' will fill with water. Water runs down the posts, and seeps down into the concrete 'cups' and can't drain out. Water needs to be shed away from the seal. C

Some fence posts rotten, others fine

Hi W, Where posts are set into concrete, the concrete is a water trap, and so stays wet. How about steel post holders concreted into the empty old concrete, with an upstand up from the ground for the new posts. Seal the posts first. C

    Low window building control

Hi R, I changed my question, as I read replies! but I understand. In the 60s, my dad sold 10 gallon carboys for indoor gardens, and wondered if he could make big fish bowls out of them. He had a mate who used to sell glass cutters at events, and he came and first cut a fish out of a pane of...

    Mountain biking

Hi, I used to ride a bike, with a tent, sleeping bag and camera, for miles and really enjoyed it. Time has gone by and the old knees aren't so good, so I added an electric motor to my bike, which enables me to still use the bike. Good for some and not for others! C

    Low window building control

Hi, All good, but I assume that I will have to dispose of the existing panes. I was wondering if I could reclaim the glass for another purpose. Is it possible to cut sheets of glass out of double glazed units? C

    How to remove newel post

Hi J, Just remembered from when I learned how to fit dowels. When you drill the hole, drill it very slightly off line, so it tightenes the newel on, when knocked in. C.

    How to remove newel post

Hi J, I think the lower end length is for strength, so it doesn't move. As for the steel, I was thinking it would be filled and painted, so it would disappear.. Make sure it is all central so the new spindles and banister line up. I don't suppose you remember Barry Bucknell do you? He...

    How to remove newel post

Hi J, I've only dealt with older buildings, and haven't seen anything like yours. I don't think yours is actually structural, but it was passed as part of the safety rail, so must be safe and solid. From what you say, I think it was built in as they built the building. Does this make it...

    How to remove newel post

Hi J, I would buy some box section: e,g, https://www.metals4u.co.uk/materials/mild-steel/mild-steel-box-section/12935-p Cut off the old newel post leaving plenty sticking up. Trim it so that a length of box section over it, then trim the new one to suit the box section, slide it in and screw it...

    Low window building control

Hi All, This survey showed a high percentage of my fault, but when I contacted them, I put my side, and they agreed, and will replace the glass. They found my original offer, with the measurements, and the glass is 'in the post' :) Thanks. C.

    Low window building control

Hi, As the top of it was quite low, I asked about the frame width so I could assess what I would be able to see, so I did say that it was floor to the lintel. I think we were both unprofessional, but I'm a DIYer so I'm allowed. On balance, I think I should take most of the blame, but they...

    Low window building control

Hi C, 1/ I explained what they were for and where they were going. 2/ The left one is a door way, so the bottom is lower than waist height. 3/ Just the size of the opening. 4/ I explained that I was a DIYer and fitting it myself. I didn't think about the safety glass angle, it was obvious...

    Low window building control

Hi, I fitted these windows into a former outside toilet coal bunker, and they've just be rejected by building control, because they're not toughened. I've fitted windows before and know that any window lower than waist height or round a door should be toughened, and when I ordered them I knew...

    Move big shed

Hi All, Lots of suggestions there. I'm on my own, so some of the suggestions aren't possible. I'll try the simplest way first, and step up to the more complicated ideas, if and when each fail. It will be a while, as other things have cropped up, one I'm about to post. Cheers, C.
