Here is another issue, they're not split properly. If you turn off the downstairs sockets, some of the upstairs ones will turn off too. I think it needs checking by a competent electrician and wiring correctly in to the CU

Thanks, I also think its accumulated leakage and the washing machine is a red herring. I will get an electrician round to check rather than firing a parts cannon at stuff

Put it back together, ran a 90 degree wash with soda crystals and the funk is gone! Hopefully it doesn't come back after a few days. The water in the drum was clear on the 90 degree wash so I didn't feel the need to run it again.
