My lads phones are available, though neither bother until break time. I always remind them to grab their phones off the van, if I go off for materials etc. We had some floor layers on site a while back and the one lad (gambling addict) was glued to his phone all day. Sad.

Poorly designed spec's yes. Looks more like to me that either the wall was meant to be thicker, or the beam is something the builder had lying around. I can't see any point or benefit in a 100mm thick wall having a spreader beam wider than the wall itself.

Having said that, it does look like your builder enjoys doing a lot retrospective grinding. Lacks a bit of foresight maybe?
