Nest thermostat not controlling hot water

With a combi boiler, the hot water is on demand. There is no on and off control. You’re not heating a hot water cylinder. You turn the hot tap on and the boiler turns on and heats the hot water to whatever temp you’ve set the boiler to for hot water. The Nest does not control that and there is...

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

Strange then, when my TRV’s have closed the radiator down the rad goes cold. So when the radiators go cold once the room has achieved TRV set point, is that not fully turned off? Didn’t know that. Instead of beating about the bush, I’ll just spit it out. i want to reduce my return temp! When...

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

Surely, with a fixed speed pump, even with the boiler at its lowest modulation percentage, the flow velocity will increase. As a result of this there is less cooling water heat transfer to the surroundings (because radiators have closed down), so the return temp will rise right up to the point...

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

As in the title - it seems that as TRV heads close down radiators there is less heat transfer available from the boiler cooling water to the house rooms. This in turn leads to a rise in boiler return temperature which ultimately goes above 55 degrees even when the initial delta T upon system...

Outdoor security light upgrade - grey pvc cables *VIDEO*

If you really want to do it right, you’ll be wanting to run the grey twin and earth cable in a plastic conduit which will involve removing the cable from where it is clipped to the walls, fitting the conduit and then pulling the twin and earth through it. At the light end of the conduit you...

How to attach thermostat to boiler?

I am not a Gas Safe Registered fitter. I am a controls engineer, so unless somebody who is gas safe and installed boilers prior to 2018 chimes in, I’m going to say I cannot guarantee this to be correct - However, I’m pretty sure that Part L of the building regulations 2005 also stipulated that...

How to attach thermostat to boiler?

All of this should be sorted out by your landlord. The heating system is/was not installed to be compliant with regulation. “Time and temperature control is required for all gas and oil boiler installations” “Installers that install boilers which do not abide by the new regulations will be...

House takes ages to heat up

Did British Gas install that boiler? We have the same boiler (installed a good many years ago) and when they installed it they did not fit an automatic bypass to the system. For the first few weeks they were back and forwards to our house to clear the same fault but it always came back. All...

Upstairs radiators a one pipe system.

No, there’s no real loss in the upstairs system. I get 70 degrees on the infeed to each upstairs radiator. There are only 6 radiators on the one pipe setup.

Upstairs radiators a one pipe system.

Hi, I am hoping an experienced plumber or heating engineer can chime in here. Our heating system consists of a condensing boiler (not combi) and the downstairs radiator system is a two pipe system. The upstairs radiators are on a one pipe system. before I continue I just want to say that the...

Shower screen glass fell out of its frame

i did think about replacing it but nothing on the market seems to match the curvature of the bath end at this point. The screen was part of the bathroom suite specifically for this bath. I would be removing it from the wall in order to glue it if I do go down that route.

Shower screen glass fell out of its frame

Hi, the screen was fitted 10+ years ago. There is no plastic hinge on the frame. Nothing has snapped. The glass is inserted into a slot and secured with some kind of sealant / adhesive. If you see the first photo you’ll see what I mean. thanks

Use existing 1950s metal conduit for rewire

Just be aware that if you want to extend any conduit runs or make alterations, the thread sizes on the 50’s stuff will be imperial and any new stuff will be metric. You can buy adapters should you need to.
