    Painting over varnish

Thanks Wayners. Maybe I misunderstand what zinsser 123 does. I assumed it operated in a similar manner to bin but 123 being water based and bin being a shellac? The paint I’ve been using for my skirting boards is crown trade fast flow quick dry satin. I had tried coating it before but it’s gone...

    Painting over varnish

Hi Appreciate this has been asked numerous times. I’ve read the threads but a lot of them are over 10 years old. I’m hoping there are some easier methods now. I’ve got some window sills and handrails to paint over. They’re varnished in finish. The window sills I’m fine with sanding down. I’ve...

    Ply overboarding

Yeah it’s all fine underneath. Screwing into the floorboards and won’t really go past them plus no cables or pipes sitting just under the boards. Thanks for the tip. Offset makes sense.

    Ply overboarding

Hi Just over boarding my floor with 12mm ply to level it out. It’s going on top of old floorboards that make up a suspended floor. I only seem to find threads on much thinner ply. But is the spacing of screws really 200mm? It’s a 14m2 area but it just feels a bit excessive… The floorboards...

I know with the lintel you should aim for a minimum of 150mm for it to sit on each side. Would it be dangerous if it was 100mm each side given it’s a pretty small opening. Total length of lintel will be 1340mm.

    is this asbestos (Ed.)

Thank you. That does make me feel a lot better. It would make sense as I think that’s what’s been used in the soffits and along the edges under the roof tiles. I’ve covered it all over now with 170mm of rockwool so floorboards are going back on today and I’ll crack on with the rest. I’ve stuck...

    is this asbestos (Ed.)

I’m not touching the actual stuff. It’s just near to where I’m working. Trying to go with best practise or not disturbing it but got all windows and front and back door open. Not much of a breeze though. Picture of what I’m working with attached. It’s not under every joist. Just a few of them so...

    is this asbestos (Ed.)

Thanks Notch. Nah there won’t have been clouds. Obviously moving around is creating dust from the floor where all the dirt is. But there are only a few small pieces. A couple have been used under joists as packers and we’ve been bashing the floorboard on top of those with a hammer so may have...

    is this asbestos (Ed.)

Completely get that. But if it is the type to have it, is it the really dangerous type? I hear so many different things and some say it’s not much worse than Mdf dust for the less dangerous stuff.

    is this asbestos (Ed.)

Hey everyone, Images attached. Hoping it’s just cement board but think it probably has asbestos in it. I was uplifting my floors to insulate underneath and noticed some packers made out of this as well as spare bits dotted around. Wary that they may have been cutting the boards and that’s all...

    Chimney conversion

Any more advice on this please?

    Chimney conversion

Yeah. Ideally I’d get rid of the whole thing but I guess that’s complicated with it being a party wall. Neighbour has a chimney breast the other side. It’s an odd construction. I’ve added some more photos to help explain it. The masonry at the top part is offset versus the bottom part if that...

    Chimney conversion

Yeah. How many would you use? Thinking one is probably not enough. Is it ok to go right across to each end so that one course will be entirely lintel?

    Chimney conversion

Hey everyone, I’m looking to convert my chimney breast into a media unit as it just sticks out far too much and dominates the room. I’ve read some other threads but mine seems to have a bit of an odd construction. My plan is to put a lintel all the way across near the top so I can open it up...

    Tiling around flexible waste pipe

Photo should be horizontal not vertical but the waste pipe comes in just over half of the other tile so that causes an issue trying to get it round. The other problem being that the flexi part is where it comes through the wall. So it may be a bit smaller than the 110mm collar.

    Tiling around flexible waste pipe

Hi I’ve spent ages googling trying to find some tips. But it seems it’s not a common question. I’ve got to tile around a flexible waste pipe. It’s 110mm soil pipe. Does anyone have any tips for this? I’ve got a pipe collar which if it was a straight pipe wouldn’t be a problem to roughly cut...

    Conservatory gutter joins

Hi Ive posted before about trying to get some new seals for some old Marshall tufflex ogee guttering. I’ve tried several different ogee seals to see if they’d fit but no joy. So I guess the next step is to just replace the whole guttering. However, it’s in a conservatory and there is metal...
