    Flourescent starters

A question that probably deserves it's own new topic

    Flourescent starters

Where did you hear that, any evidence to back it up? Electronic starters have been used in enclosed fittings for years without issue. Many Thorn (enclosed) fittings came with electronic starters in them from the factory, as did some Fitzgerald fittings and probably many others.

Will I need a rewire for 1950s house

From my experience of renovating a house that I originally said didn't need rewiring (was rewired circa 1990), once you start adding extra sockets and moving lights/light switches to where you want them, you'll pretty much end up fully rewiring anyway! It may be worth just accepting it's...

    Flourescent starters

Do yourself a favour and buy an electronic one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELECTRONIC-Fluorescent-Tube-Light-lamp-Starters-UK-Made/153379599710?hash=item23b622f55e:g:-9AAAOSw-EBZp9vj The benefits are numerous: Drastically increases lamp life. This is essential as a lot of modern tubes have...

Outside Light Suggestion for communal entrance

What's wrong with the light already in place? It looks like a 2D fluorescent, if so it might only need a replacement lamp or at most it'll only want a ballast replacement

    Outside Lights

Unless the optics are extremely good (they won't be) there will still be a lot of light shining directly to the sky. Even if there wasn't, why do you want to light up the underside of your soffits? Yes it does look OK I suppose, but not good enough to warrant the light pollution it will create...

    Outside Lights

This! I know everyone's taste is different, but I cannot understand why anyone would want to light upwards? It's just a waste of energy and creates unnecessary light pollution

    what could be causing this!

Very unlikely if it is indeed the entire electrical supply that is being lost at once (lights, sockets, cooker boiler etc. all at the same time). As said by several members you need to report this to the DNO, and pronto too!

    Terminal blocks in sockets

I have read conflicting reports as to whether crimping of solid cable is allowable or not, I would try to avoid it personally. As said above, soldering and heat-shrink would be the method I'd use, that or appropriately rated Wago connectors. Edit: You would want blue crimps for 2.5mm cable...

    what could be causing this!

Best thing to do is report it to the DNO as this does not sound right

Poorly Retro-fitted DPC, Best Way to Make Good?

Hi all, Just investigating the rising damp issue in the original part of our house (built pre 1900). We could see that a DPC had been retro-fitted at some point, but this obviously hadn't fixed the issue. After removing a brick (see attached image) it appears the DPM only just cover the base of...

    Light fitting quality

Dull fact which some may not know: decaf tea and coffee still have caffeine in them, just lower amounts. Not ideal to drink before bed! Tea and coffee with zero caffeine is usually called 'caffeine free' (never tried it but I imagine it's disgusting) :-)

Individually wired 4 socket extension cable

Why not just use 4x unswitched single sockets with pattress boxes mounted to a board and house the relays in an adaptable box on the same board. Sounds like less hassle to me.

    Ceiling light confusion

There's a sticky for this right in this very fourm... The twin red makes it very easy to identify the switch cable. https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/wiring-diagrams-for-lighting-circuits.37582/

    Floodlight Problem

They won't last long & possibly not electrically safe. IMO I suggest you send them back and buy something properly made. Ledvance would be a good choice. 150w (if it is actually 150w) will create a huge amount of glare unless it is mounted very high up & should be angled horizontal or only a...

    Floodlight Problem

Earth fault. Cheap Ebay jobs by any chance (more than likely with only 500mm of cable)? Also are you lighting up a tennis court with the 150w?

Can anyone ID this capacitor please? Linked to....

Would advise buying a brand new capacitor of the correct value, the wrong value may cause the motor to run hot or weak (or both!). Unless you have one laying around to try, probably not worth messing about trying to get one from an old tumble dryer or the likes. There's one slightly cheaper...

    Replacing light bulbs

Many thanks, I am fully aware of that. I was actually thinking as I wrote it that the only reason would be due to the near 100 cri of halogen. In this instance however, I very much doubt that colour rendering will be an issue and this will just be a typical domestic environment (could be wrong...

    Replacing light bulbs

You can buy LED GU10 lamps for as little as £1 that consume 1/10th the electricity of a 50w halogen. Why on earth would you want to use a halogen?

Cheap column rads from Ebay / Amazon?

Thanks for all the replies so far. The room has no radiator or pipework at the minute. I've already bough a brand new Barlo convector rad (which is out of the 30-day return period, doh!) but we've now realised it would make more sense to have two vertical rads, one on each end wall
